Here's how it works with my G80.

I get a call or text that says my car is due for service, I don't what it is is, the dealer does but I don't. They give me an appointment date and time on text. I accept or not.On the day I get a text telling me my valet is on the way. He arrives at my house leaves me some other high end Genesis, usually a G70 or GV80 and takes my car. Later in day I get a text asking me where I am so they can deliver car to me and get theirs back. When it arrives they hand me the dealer invoice telling me what they did with $0 all over it. Usually its three pages long, symthetic oil, all filters, diff fluid tires rotated all fluids done and whatever else the manual says is due at the stated mileage. Of course my car has been washed and detailed too.

Well I figure you can pay for your oil changes at the beginning or the end, neither way is free. It just depends how deep your pockets are. I imported an 05 Honda Accord to leave in Palm Springs. One owner with a little over 200k and had all the history with it including all the free oil changes for life. Very interesting reading through them. That service advisor should have been shot. Most of the invoices were in the 2-700 hundred dollar range as there wasnt a thing that didnt get changed or flushed or pumped or massaged or whatever Honda RECOMMENDED. Talked to a very good friend of mine a month ago who pulled wrenches there during that time frame and he confirmed what I thought. Service advisors were on a commission and they knew how to get it. He said there were times when he wrote on the work order what was good or bad for the customer to see and the bastard would change what he documented. I know not all advisors are like that but it does happen and I had it happen with my wife and her car while I was out of town. Similar unnecessary but they knew the car was under warranty. I had a good talk to the advisor when I got back. Told him it must be embarrassing to tell a client your car needs all this work with such few miles. He said to buy a different model of vehicle as this is just basic maintenance for a performance car. Yeah right.

Most times its just a way to get the customer into the dealer. Then they "FIND" something that needs doing.

One thing that's important to remember is that dealers for most companies are franchises, and not owned by the company whose cars they sell.  While the car is under warranty you have to get the company recommended service done or you could void the warranty if something goes wrong that should have been maintained.  So when you say he did the Honda recommended service, that was his job.  It's all clearly laid out in the owner's manual and there should be no surprises.  Honda wouldn't recommend any service that wasn't necessary.  However, it sounds like he was not pushing Honda-recommended service, but was trying to basically steal money from the customer for unnecessary service.

Some dealers are sneaky and make up their own service booklets to bring more money into the privately-owned dealership.  My brother in law in Toronto had that that happen to him.  He called me one day and asked if it was normal to replace a bunch of stuff at 48,000 km.  IIRC, the company recommended replacement interval for those things was in the range of 100,000 to 160,000 km, so I told him to ignore the little booklet the dealer gave him and just go by the recommendations in his owners manual, which he did and didn't have a problem.  Service advisors will be told (or incetivized) to push the unnecessary maintenance but can't force the customer to do it in the long run.  If somebody finds a dealer doing that, they should call the company's customer relations dept. (the company should get the dealer to stop the practice), and then they should find another dealer that is honest in their practices.

CBC Marketplace actually did a show on this very problem a few years back: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/marketplace-dealerships-service-upselling-1.4300557

They don't tell you what service they are bringing your car in for?

I ask they tell, usually it scheduled mtce. per Mfg. recommended schedule, last time it was oil filter etc plus evap canister which they had determined was too small for the V8, basically a recall campaign. They left me a 365 HP 3.3TT Advanced G70 which was a literal rocket. I looked it up on road tests and it was a mid 4 second 0-60 car and dipped into the 12s quarter. I'm not a turbo fan so to me my G80 is such a better car and the valets usual agree because they rarely get to drive a G80 5.0 since there are only 163 in Canada.

Well, they certainly look after you.  Though personally I would be nervous handing my keys over to a valet... but that's just me, I can admittedly be a little overprotective of my cars.  wink

They call him a Valet, guy shows up in business suit with another $80,000 car for me so ya at first I was worried but hey, its just a car. I get his phone number and name and by this time I know the two or three guys who do it. Always young professional guys, kinda remind me of the bank tellers - mgt. in training in the big branches here in financial district. While they do take care of me there is no doubt that I paid for all this in the price of the car.
