A couple of major websites down

Last Friday one of the auction sites that I use went down. Hibid auctions I read this morning has been a victim of a ransomware attack and is down worldwide. This morning Facebook also went down, I dont know what is happening with Facebook, but I wonder about all the personal information that could be compromised.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp (all Facebook companies) have been down since 11'ish am EST this morning.

Doesn't bother me much, but my kids and their friends are "freaking out".

It's really curious that this happened soon after a 20/20 expose last night about Facebook's misinformation tactics.

Early indications are the outage is due to an ongoing DNS failure.

For those not so familiar with internet lingo, the DNS translates website names into IP addresses that can be read by a computer. It's often called the "phonebook of the internet."

Working for IBM, I am quite familiar with DNS and I know that a change to the global DNS can take hours, and even a day, to propagate around the world, so it might be a pretty 
traumatic next little while for the younger generation.

 Me too! I can't say how much disdain I have for these sites and the damage they have caused to society, and will continue to cause moving into the future.

They can go away forever, as far as I am concerned, but you know they won't...
