Today, I got a hold of the local appraisal guy to talk about getting the 65 done. Same guy did the registration appraisal 3 years ago. Good guy.
Now I was under the impression I'd need this done to allow me to get insurance for this car. This guy first asked me about how much I'd be looking to insure it for. After I told him, he said, "you don't need an appraisal". Haggarty just looks up an equivalent car (Catalina), and calls it equal in that value range.
So I called Haggarty, got through right away (strange these days) gave the details, and had insurance in all of 10 minutes with a printed slip shortly after. All at a really decent rate, and including the salvage back to owner fee. Maybe eventually I'll add a higher value, but as of now I'm good.
Basically, it was a pleasant surprise I wasn't expecting, and one less step to the street. And my wife is really impressed I actually did this on my own.
Nice.

They have been doing it this way for a long time, I guess if you have a high end trailer queen and your value requested exceeds their range, an appraisal would be needed. Havent heard of any issues with claims

One other issue is fraudulent on line insurance companies are out there now, they cover you for a good on line price but they are a fake insurance company. For regular home and auto policies.
Another scam is companies that offer donation and other services for deceased people, you search for an obituary and find the one you are looking for, you pay for flowers, donations, etc and they take your money. They either dont provide the service or deduct a big fee. I found this out recently when a neighbour passed away, my search for an obituary and funeral notice turned up a crap site before I found the real one by the correct funeral home.

As I've said before with Haggarty, I had nothing but grief when I had electrical short in the Avanti, adjuster said I should have let it burn, as wiring harness was fried but they stated " no flame no claim" fought with them for 4 months and finally had to get 3 rd party appraiser involved!!! They relented when threat of court was brought up and gave the go ahead for complete 're-wire". I cancelled with them right after repairs were completed!!!

I went with Haggerty a couple years ago;
I initially went with them just for my Firebird which was already being disassembled;
I was quite happy with their agent, and how they helped me get it all figured out.
I then added my '91 Grand Am to the policy (it's a Quad4HO car, and essentially the Grand Am equivalent to the same year Calais Quad442).
A year or so later when we got our truck, I went with them for that too.
My brother found a company that is a bit cheaper, but I wouldn't want his policy as it's one of those polices where it's got classic plates and you're only supposed to drive it to and from local shows, and need to arrange if taking it out of the city.... no thanks.

Sadly we can't do that in Manitoba with our government insurance. We have to buy basic from them, then the extended policy from Hagerty and our insurance company MPIC takes the salvage or sets a fee for us to buy the car back.
