Can someone measure a complete big block please?

I know, strange request coming from me!

What I'd like to know is the measurement of a 396/427/454 from the bellhousing flange to the water pump flange. I'd like it to be for the long water pump style please. It would pretty much need to be on the floor, not in a car to be an accurate enough measurement.

I can also figure it out if anyone has just a long style water pump kicking around. I'd like the measurement off it from the pulley flange to the flanges where the pump mounts to the block.

Thanks!

With some help and direction from some CP members to certain websites, I now have what I need except for one more. And nobody will believe this one....

Can someone measure a 194/230/250 for me from bellhousing flange to water pump pulley flange please? I know, I know, be easy on me.......!

No, I haven't been drinking, yes, I'm serious!

Perfect, thanks Dan. I knew somebody out there must have one sitting on the floor (or stand). That's pretty much the same as a big block from what I can find for info online.

A 235, 283, 409,and 427/454 all use the same motor mounts, so they are all the same length from motor mount back to the transmission block flange. The 230 etc 6s should be the same. Ive never owned the 427/454 and a long time since I owned the newer 6.

When I switched out the 283 for the 409, I discovered the 409 block was longer forward of the motor mounts, the fan sat farther into the small block fan shroud (I used the 283 fan and spacer on the 409). I assumed a 454/427 is likely the same length as the 409.

Never thought about the 6s being the same length but it makes sense.

Ive never owned a car with the long water pump, was that due to a longer nose on the later cars with the rad being farther away from the engine I assume?

Yes, building one for someone else.  I want it to be able to adjust to 6 cyl, small block or big block. My plan is to make the radiator upright frame slide on rails but need to know the longest it will need to be. I'm starting off with one of these and then adding to it.

I made it long enough that it would take engine and transmission. It breaks down and is stored in the corner when I am not using it.

Its all light gauge tubing so fairly light to move. The material was from a metal skid used to transport metal decorative fencing. An old engine stand, an axle stand and Princess Auto casters. It rolled around quite easily with that small block on it.

Why not start with one of those four wheeled cradles ? One that attaches to the motor mounts or the four corners of the block ?

Because they are too low. It's no fun bending way down to adjust the timing, adjust the idle speed or fuel mixture on a carb when the engine is that low. On a normal engine stand it's a great working height to have the engine at. Plus a lot of the ones I've seen are made for a specific engine only. I am making this pretty much universal.

Use one as a starting point. Place it as high as you desire then do the rad support, dash, etc. underneath it.

When you build it make sure its high enough from the floor that your cherry picker can pass underneath. Thats why mine is so high off the floor.
