Food prices are going to shoot through the roof in 2022

As some of you know I work in the food industry. I'm seeing unprecedented increases in the cost of our raw materials needed to bottle our products. Label printing has gone up at least three times since 2019. The biggest kicker is the price of jars. Nobody in Canada produces jars so they all come from overseas (usually China). I ordered two pallets of jars this week (375ml and 750ml) and got a phone call from our supplier in Dartmouth confirming I still wanted to order as the price of the 750ml jar has doubled since I ordered last (which was this past summer)! It all boils down to the cost of shipping. The cost of a container load of product has tripled since last year. Without getting into political discussion it is a shame we can't get products like jars locally. The only bottling product I can get made in Canada is 375g plastic bears for honey which are made in Canada. My other concern is having enough materials to meet demand. In the 5 years of working for this company I haven't seen demand as high. A typical purchase order for a large grocery store a year or two ago would have been 5 cases of our product per week.  Now I'm seeing purchase orders for as many as 22 cases for one store in one week.

I'm sure all the other food producers are having the same issues. I did read that Canadian's can expect to pay on average $1000 more in 2022 for food and I think this assumption is accurate.

I think we are unfortunately seeing the negative side of corporations and businesses migrating manufacturing to cheaper overseas locations over the past 30 years.  It never made sense to me to set ourselves up to depend upon other countries who could end up being our adversaries in the future, but it is what it is.  Chasing the almighty dollar.

And now it's coming back to bite us.

I guess Todd the biggest problem we have in this country is as Canadians we

don't believe in being self reliant. We tend to be quite content with getting

all our needs from somewhere else in the world, and that includes food, manufactured goods,

and developing our natural resources for ourselves first.

When it hits the fan,we then need to grovel and beg for foreign countries to give us a fair shake.

Sad fact of life here in Canada, and has been this way for a long ,long time.

It's one thing to outsource consumer goods, but when that creeps into our food supply, we've basically screwed ourselves.

God help us if we end up going to war with one of these countries.

Ive been saying for years, where will we get our stuff when chinas middle class develops to the point they need it all for themselves. The just in time supply chain has developed many weak links, and it only takes one. World trade is great until it isnt. Covid has changed so many things, just 1 hiccup has spread quite a ripple.

If the prices get high enough there should be some interest. Or the supply just goes away while the demand doesn't ??
