Don't laugh when it falls over itself in fourth, didn't keep her up enough, she has little torque, but not too bad, she's loosening up. And no, I'm not ready to powershift, but getting there.

Thanks guys!

Question; what is the redline on a stockish 327/275? I haven't gone over 48.

Back in the day I had a couple of 283s with manual transmissions and the valves usually started to float about 5500 rpm. These were stock engines other than a four barrel and dual exhaust and were far from fresh, usually more than 70,000 miles on them. If the valve springs are new or good quality you would probably be good for a bit more rpm.

thanks. It has new springs, rockers, pushrods and lifters.

Feels like there might be a little more, but I think it's just making noise at that point.

More revs, longer time between shifts.  More exhaust music / noise

Yes, the little 283 is well out of the torque curve at 5000 rpm. I drove a friends 63 laurentian, 283 3 on the wheel. On the highway back in the 70s we were fooling around and decided to see how fast we could go in second gear. Well it would do just over 90 mph in second and 105 in third! I wouldnt try it today, too many police and too much traffic. I couldnt imagine the fines today cruising on the highway at the equivalent of over 170 km/hr!

Love the look and sound of that car. Goes down the road very nicely and shifts so smoothly.

Mark, you have pretty much convinced me to put a 4 speed in my 68 Bel Air post car.

I have 2 68 Muncie M20s, a 73 close ratio M21 and a couple of 80s BW T10s from Camaros. They are most likely to be behind a 72 402 BB.

Interested in feedback on what trans would work best, especially if I keep the rear end gear in the 3.31 to 3.36 range.

M20 wide ratio would be best imop with the 3.31 and a BB.

I have 3.08's in the 65 right now, and I don't think I'd move any lower into a 3.31, even though I have all the stuff to build a 12 bolt with it. The cruise RPM is very comfortable and pulls fine even with the little motor. A good compromise.

So I'm of the opinion that the 3.08 (or 3.07) is a good ratio to go with the 4 speed.

Plus one to what Mark says John. If you aren't looking for killer performance and want to enjoy it, use an M20. I love my 3.07/M20/427 combination. I honestly think GM missed the boat by not offering it in 66 full size Pontiacs.

I had it out today at 5 degrees. Just a 2 kilometer run to the optometrist and back for a glasses adjust. Loving driving it mid December like an actual daily car. It feels so right.

If we get a good clean and cold snow cover, I'm going to take it out on the side streets to hoon around a bit. That, I'll make a video of. I'm not worried as long as it isn't in a salt spray.
