Drove the 65 today, and some things came to mind,

We were out driving the 65 today in Burlington Christmas traffic. Treating it as a daily driver. Shuttling my wife around places gives me an excuse to drive it. With all the insulation in it now, and with the new heater it's nice and toasty. As good as any new car.

The thought occurred to me on the drive... The last time I drove a "classic" in December, close to Christmas was in my 69 2+2 in 78, which at the time was only a (old) nine year old car, and not classic at the time in any way. I'd not driven any car since then that I valued as they were always kept off the street in winter.

I gotta say, I'm loving having a 56 year old car that you don't get too worried about, and can still have fun year round with. This is the way to do it.

Second thought; Get all your driving time in now guys, the way things are going, I'm not convinced It'll stay this way indefinitely.

It's great to enjoy it year round, after all it's only a car.  They were made to drive.  What have you done to protect it from rusting due to the salt exposure?

When I redid mine I installed seat heaters. It was only after the first snowfall did I put it away. Too much salt.

I'm only going out when it's dry Mark. There was some melting snow, but it dropped and held below freezing, so no water anywhere. I won't ever go out in the slop. Might be some salt dust, but I'm not too worried.

That sounds like a good plan.  Salt does the most damage where you can't see it, in crevices, inside unprotected frame members, etc.  And of course it only becomes an electrolyte in solution.

Still might not be a bad idea to give it a spray with 'wet' rust protection, like Krown, Rust Check, or others (Fluid Film?  I haven't had experience with it but others have mentioned it here).  Either way I don't think I'd worry about it too much - I tend to react to rust due to winter driving from an east coast perspective...

Mark, Ive had mine out in January, but never in slop. My speedo also doesnt like the cold, the grease in the head unit is likely chilled too much.

Sadly the salt has been out here for a few weeks so I'm done until we get some nice cold weather and the streets bare up again. Last year I drove my car in December and January on nice clean bare roads.

I don't blame anyone with a car of any real value not driving it. It wouldn't either.

You scrape it clean , and as the sun and heat melts the ice enough that the next morning its like glass again, and repeat the whole process again..

I've always driven the Empress year round (after more than a quarter of a century in our family it was time she had a name). However, not when the outside temperature requires use of the heater. Being a tiny matrix, fitted in the UK before original delivery, it struggles to even keep the windscreen clear. Rust worries are non existent. The salt takes one look and decides there's no much more it can make!

Rare shots of frozen pond a no snow! Curious if the Chevelle came from Vancouver Island? A friend of mine had one, 396(402) , turbo 400, White bucket seat interior and column shift. He drove my daughter and I to her wedding at Royal Roads University in 2001 in the ragtop. Once on the grounds put the top down and did a burn out to announce our arriva. Great memories for sure. He told me when he sold it that it went to Alberta. Hmmm. Just wondering?

Certainly buckets with a column shift on one of those would be rare. Great looking car!

Food for thought....Happy New Year

When we get a break in the weather, two or three times each winter, I start both of mine up and back them out to run for a while in the driveway. They are licensed year round but I dont leave the yard with them when theres snow on the ground. Waiting for the weather to smarten up, that is break into the minus teens, to give them a run.

Same. The odd time the streets will be bare and I actually head out for a drive. Last year I drove my car Nov/Dec/Jan on nice streets.
