Ah the good old days..

My wife got a really slick photo scanner that makes it super easy to scan photos. So, in my spare time I've been scanning a bunch of old family and car photos. I came across these photos that brought back fond memories of the good old days when I was ateenager. I had my 70 Sklyark "GS Clone" and my two good friends Rob and Nick had Oldsmobiles. I remember the day Rob bought his 72 Cutlass Supreme. He paid 400 bucks for it. Soon we were scoping the auto wreckers looking for better doors and fenders. The yard workers usually had pity on us broke kids and gave us good deals on parts. $25 for a fender or a door. I remember paying $125 for a complete mint interior for my Buick. Anyway, I found a couple of photos of the Oldsmobiles. Here's Robs getting worked on in his front yard.

Rob prepped the car himself and took it to Earl Schieb and got the $149.95 single stage enamel paint job. It turned out pretty good. Here it is with Nick's 71 Supreme. Sadly I witnessed Nick lose control of the Olds the same year and hit a telephone pole head on. He was fine but the car was a write off.

I also dug up this photo of a GTO (400/4 speed) sitting in a yard in North Carolina in 1989. I wonder where it is now?

They sure were the good old days. Funny though, I would have considered a 72 model a newish car back in 1982 or so.

Funny but not funny now. We would cruise around and look in back yards for enduro/race cars. One enduro we needed 200 cars as a bunch of guys were coming up from the US. We had 50 free cars in about 4 days. Lemans,Laguna,Cutlas,Monte etc etc When we found, we always kept the 74 Impala with the sb 400. OH...those cars today!!!!

Cool cars ... I'm a huge Olds fan.

In those days I roamed Dom's Auto Wreckers in Courtice (Curtis), Ontario. There was a lot of cars of that vintage. There was the carcass of a '68 Cutlass Supreme convertible with AC there that I used to drool all over.cry

Another car that got away- a 71 GS350 factory 4 speed car for sale in Goderich Ontario in 1990. It was a one owner car (minister) who told me he always drove manual trans cars but was "horrified" to see a Hurst shifter when the car arrived. He thought the congregation would think he was reckless lol. Something like 51 4 speed 350 GS convertibles made in 1971. The seller refused my offer and I ended up buying a 66 Mustang. A week later he calls me and says he'd take my offer!

I see he went for the chrome trailer hitch rather than the Ralley  wheels. Hey Todd around 1975  or 76 there was a white 1973 GS   in a yard near Goderich. A 455 car I believe. Was a l fire job !

Ya, he didn't want the car to be too showy.
There were two more GS' that I missed out on both because I was a broke teenager. There was a green on green 70 GS 455 in London and a 70 GS Stage 1 also in London. The Stage 1 was from Texas and wasn't running. It was bamboo cream with brown buckets/auto and AC. It also had the super rare "doggie dish" rally wheels with trim rings. The guy who brought it back from Texas stopped into the dealership I worked at back in 2008. After talking to him a few minutes about cars I soon realized he was the guy with that Stage 1 back in 1987. He couldn't believe all the details I remembered about that car lol. I can't remember what I had for breakfast but when it comes to cars I wanted back in the day it all comes back sharp as a tack!

Here's an interesting couple of photos of the family Strato Chief. Looks like dad was toying with whitewalls and then went blackwalls with his slotted mags. Which is best? I can't decide really.

One of my regrets is that I wasnt a picture taker in my youth. These pictures bring back a lot of good thoughts from my past. When I was 20 and going to trade school I had a 1970 Chevelle with a 350 with a bit of cam in it. I came home on a Friday night got into a bit of street racing and blew the engine up. In a panic on Saturday morning I bought a 1964 Pontiac Strato Chief for 25 bucks and put the 283 in my Chevelle. I had to be back at trade school on Monday! The old 283 ran good after a valve adjustment and served me well, plus it was really good on gas.

I hear ya. I don't have any good pictures of my cars. I have a picture of my brother sleeping on the back seat of my '68 442, and a picture of my beater '83 Omega and that's about it.

From the age of 17 until about 24 there are no pictures of me in family albums.

I do wish I had taken more photos of my cars but I do have a few. Here's a pic someone took of me on one hot July evening after replacing the bondo filled passenger fender on my first car (70 Skylark) with a nice junk yard fender. Look at the hair lol

What's wrong with your hair?  Sure beats what passes for hairstyles today!

Great car pics, Todd.  That GS 4-speed convertible has me drooling!

Oh, and blackwalls for chrome slots, or white letter (depends on the car).  Never been a fan of 'mags' with whitewalls.  smile

How about this one? Yours truly at the London Autorama show in the parking lot (Western Fair)  I think Autorama was in the fall so I suspect 1981, If so, that Chevy S10 in the background would have been a "new" 82 (first year for S10). This Delorean would have been on of the first in Canada I assume. I just finished watching the Delorean documentary on Netflix. Quite the story.

Fairly common conversion in the early to mid 60's.

I first saw that on a new 62 months after a neighbor bought the car.
