Anyone following the James B Webb telescope mission?

Webb just completed it's final nail biting deployment. The right primary mirror is now in place! 178 or so different individual operations to get to this point, and none could fail or this 10 billion/20 year investment would all be for nothing.

If it works as expected, we'll likely be getting some data, images and discoveries we've never dreamt of in about 6 months time. Here's hoping!

Hopefully it will be trouble free when its up and running. I remember the Hubbell telescope had focusing problems and there was a space trip to add another lens to correct the problem.

Am I that bad?

I'm serious.  I haven't been keeping up on 'space' exploration for awhile, though I am fascinated by it.  The scope of what they are trying to do and the benefit that they hope to extract from it is extraordinary.

Seriously humbling in many ways, especially the extent of the effort that they are going to to accomplish this, but moreover the entirety of everything extraterrestrial and how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things.  All of our struggles and worries mean nothing, really.  Not to mention that everything we consider to be important could be wiped out in an instant by some random meteor of just the right size and trajectory.  Really makes you feel small and powerless, like we are just along for the ride, despite our delusions of having control over our lives and our world.  On the flip side makes you realize that it's senseless to not consider just living for the day and doing what makes you happy.  Like driving your '65 in the winter.  Seriously, enjoy it while you can.  Sorry if I sound a little silly here... just a glimpse of what goes on inside this noggin, most days. confuse

So I'll say it again... thanks for sharing this!  I may be the only board member who wasn't aware of it, but regardless, I appreciate it.

There's at least 2 members here.

The other one doesn't follow the news other than a little bit of reading online and rumour has it he's never heard of this!

Well, you tell your "friend" he's in good company.  wink

I don't tend to seek out news much these days, though I will say reading about this telescope brings me back to the days of a wide-eyed child being amazed that men could walk on the moon!

Thats just awesome Mark! I'm on the same page about us as a planet really not amounting to a speck of dust in the big picture. And that really you should live this precious (and precarious) life with this in mind.

It's entirely possible we're about to see some things that may just slap us in the back of our heads. I hope anyways.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing what might become of this.  We may be on the brink of an awakening of similar magnitude to when it was broadly realized that the Earth isn't flat...
