Chroming Pricing

Been a few years since I sent something out to get rechrome-so I am not up on pricing.I was reading the latest Old Autos and there is an ad from Cambridge Custom Chrome (which is 15 minutes from my house)-they had a rear bumper for a 70 chevelle.I really don't need one but I contacted them for a price- sticker shock $1,600 or $1,400 with a good core-are you kidding me.I helped a buddy who restores chevelles-about 10 yrs ago the reproduction bumpers needed some tweaking-today they are a very good fit-I can buy 4 bumpers for what they want for one-I know theirs is an original(hopefully).Wonder what the mint NOS rear bumper in gm packaging I bought in 1984 is worth!!!!

Keep on Cruising!

Dave

The biggest part of that pricing is in the restrictions that the government has put on the chemicals
that chromes use, at least it is here in BC.
Yes it is crazy pricing.
8 yrs ago I got some chroming done (28) pieces 8-9000, now it is about 14-15000or more.

Dave I have heard a lot of complaints regarding quality with that business. When I built my Chevelle I used the reproduction bumpers at about $500 picked up at Carlisle and was very satisfied with the quality. My 2 cents.

Imagine re-chroming a '58 Buick or Mercury, these days. You'd need to mortgage the ranch.

Greta would have something to say about doing that!
