Great Vise Test Video

I bust my vise in the garage today. It was a 5" Westward tools swivel base. I'm always careful and figured a pipe on the handle might kill it, which it did....

Soooo, I'm vise shopping. I found what I thought is a really great video.

I have a 25 year old Costco swivel vise that also rotates and has pipe jaws on the bottom. I dont abuse it, and I have a fifty year old RAE brand vise for the rough work. The RAE is comparable to the old Record vise made in England. I honestly dont know what I would buy if I broke one of them. I was at an estate auction and an old Record vise sold for $250, but it looked hardly used. Probably a good deal compared to what is available today.

Yeah, I'm really not sure what I will buy to replace this one I broke.

I inherited a vintage 6" vice from my Dad. It is a great brand name, Wodin, made in England. Tough, tough vice.

I bought a Pro Point 8" vice on sale at Princess auto. I wouldn't buy Powerfistno only Pro Point there. It works good.

I'd look for a used, vintage vice made in England ... good old English steel! Most vices are made in China now, out of regurgitated Hyundais.

Try to find an affordable anvil also, that doesn't dent from hammer blows after use.no I have a couple Engish Record vices that hold up.

Don't use a vice as an anvil, even though some have an anvil surface on them. That anvil surface is only for light work.

Speed-watched the video. Interesting.

I broke a vice at the threaded "shoe" that receives the threaded rod that is inside the vice.

I have Record wood-working vices that I fitted with Maple jaws ... great vices.

Another tidbit: Princess Auto sells magnetic, plastic, non-marring jaw covers for metal-working vices. You just put them on, and no more jaw knurl marks on your work.smile

Thanks for this!

I am not currently in the market for a vice, but when I was looking I was primarily looking at older ones with a fixed base.

I cannot recall the one I bought, but I know I have slightly bent the handle - it's funny to me that the first failure (after the swivel base) on many of these was the handle.

I think the best place to find a good quality Vintage vise is Facebook MP, or Kijiji. Keep your eyes peeled. New off brand vises...you simply don't know what your getting, period. Vintage...almost always made with the very best ductile iron.

Picked up a really nice 60's vintage RAE last year for $25 on FB.

The year before, got a nice large Record from Cliff.

So far no luck with Kijiji or Marketplace for me but I'm going to do some of the local Swap N' Shop pages as well.

my experience is that these are REALLY hard to find on kijiji ect;
you need to find them in a garage sale ect, or a used tool shop.

Sure it varies, but I seem to usually find a good supply of vintage bench vices on Kijiji.

There is a trio of RAE vises down here close to me if you want one or all Carl. I know they are heavy, but if you see something you like down here let me know and I'll get it to you.

That's a antique blacksmith's post vice. Depending on condition (yours looks great), worth about $150.00 - $300.00.

I had 3 of them (sold a complete one, sold a partial one, and kept the best one). I like the spring that makes them faster/easier to open the jaws.

Looks like a 4 or 5 inch non-swivel Record. Nice vice.

Hi Carl, you can read the contact information in the pictures. The only thing is there isnt any way to know how old the ad is on the site.

Yes, the phone number is listed. However, when I Google the number it comes up as being The Holy Redeemer Parish Centre in Winnipeg! Not impossible that is correct but does seem odd.

Thanks Paul. I checked it out. Far side of the city but if I get to that area I may have to go look at it.
