After an Almost 10 year Search I Finally Got one.

In 1963 GM offered for the first time, an optional AM/FM radio for all their Brands.

FM was just beginning , and I don't think many people buying cars thought much of

spending extra to get it. I've been looking for this rare radio since I got my Parisienne almost 10 years ago.

Through the years the prices have gone up and the number of radios available have gone down.

Luckily I was able to get this one from a seller who didn't have it listed for sale, and didn't know he had

one until I inquired about the radio. It's in excellent condition, and I'll be bench testing it to see how well it works.

The radio was the same for 1964 Pontiacs.

Nice find George, wow!

I pulled one out of a 63 Bonneville in a wrecking yard in the 80's and I remember at that time how elated I was to find it! Hen's teeth those FM's.

Wow! Now with FM you can get a bluetooth transmitter and stream from your phone.

Nice find! I don't know about other parts of the country, but there are zero AM stations left in this area. The old AM-only radios aren't much use.

Excellent score George!!!!

My friend Rob had been looking one for his 66 GTO, but kept getting outbid on eBay (selling prices in the $750 - $1000 range). I spotted one in excellent condition for him that wasn't really listed correctly, and he got it for a reasonable price (still a few hundred bucks).

Same here. I was wondering why all my radio picked up was static ... thought it was pooched, but then I clued in.

Thanks Jim, One of my post pandemic trips I am hoping to make it to the Island,.... sooner than later.

We have friend there and I would love to drop by to see your homestead and have a couple of pops.

Actually my new radio came from your neck of the woods....I bet one of the presets is set for CFAX.

neat find - I learned something new today!
I had occasionally wondered when FM radios first showed up;
I have a 1985 Grand Am owners manual, and iirc it has a supplement with "all" the Nationwide(?) FM radio stations!
I know in the 1980's I was still listening to the local top forty AM station (good old AM-106).

I find it hard to believe that anywhere in north America has no AM broadcasts!? - the broadcasts carry further, and in lower population areas or mountainous areas, I have always understood that AM makes more sense.

Here's a list of AM/FM radio stations across Canada.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_radio_stations_in_Canada

Pick a province and look through the list...there are still AM stations listed...but not like back in the 60's and 70's.

Living in Windsor, CKLW was the big one everyone listened to in the 60's.

Cool find....Automatic Radio was a Toronto radio manufacturing company that made aftermarket radios and radio kits,

for cars in the 60's. Your radio looks like it was one of the kits. The radio you have looks like it's a 1963/64  AM Pontiac radio.

The knobs are 63/64 as well. The dial and dial push buttons were probably changed with one of the Automatic Radio FM kits.

I have an FM converter still. While it cant replace factory am/fm it would be common to be added in the sixties or seventies. I had this one in a 70 Chevelle back in the late 70s. I also added a rear antenna and it worked better than the windshield antenna.

I don't remember when Calgary first got FM stations, but I do remember CJAY 92 going on the air in 1977.

Ahh, CHFM 95.9 was Calgary's first FM station on 1962.

In the early 70's I bought a Realistic (Radio Shack) FM/cassette player for my 55 Chev.

I remember mounting it my glove box  because these type of

aftermarket under dash units were being stolen all the time.
