ours is jailbroken;
We got it that way as a silent protest from a family member who was pissed at the way the movie/broadcasting industry is going...
Our experience with accessing stuff through the jailbreak is spotty - it all depends on the servers that it's accessing.
There is a good amount of stuff that the firestick gives you access to, and we found it's Netflix interface (something which was supposed to go away) was better than the one built into our tv.

We have a Firestick. I don't understand what jailbreaking would do? The apps are already free (you do of course need a subscription to the services such as Netflix etc). Youtube is on there as well.
I use my Firestick mainly so that I could download the Cinema HD app which enables me to stream movies and tv shows, some of which are still in the theaters. Since my tv has a built in Apple TV and a host of other apps including Amazon, you Tube and others, I use the Firestick mainly to access the Cinema App. There are numerous sites on the web which outline the steps one can take to "jailbreak" a firestick to enable one to download additional apps not included with Amazon. Many of these third party apps give one access to all kinds of media including games. I believe that it comes down to personal choice and one's individual comfort level. Additionally, one requires a very good wi-fi signal for a Firestick to work properly.
