New Safety Inspection in Ontario???

I've heard from a couple of garages that new inspection coming soon & will be "costly" Government requiring purchase of video camera from 1 source only at a cost of $ 10,000 [ OUCH!] more intense inspection, and tires over 5 yrs. old will "fail" no matter how good they are!!!  Cost of safety Insp. will go up substanceually to cover costs , labour for time to video everything & document it!!!!  Both shops are "pondering" whether to go ahead or just drop doing them, as return on out lay will be long term. Worried that rules could change again & they get stuck with a 10 grand useless camera, just like the emission test , when they dropped the dyno's & went to sniffer" then cancelled the whole thing & they got stuck with equipment!!!

Heard the exact same thing, also to be mandatory annual or by annual, hence the dropping of the license sticker.

I have heard this also. The Ontario government is in the process of revamping the truck and bus inspections to be entirely online requiring thousands of dollars of new equipment for truck inspection stations. I have heard that many smaller shops will stop doing truck inspections and heavy vehicle emissions testing altogether because they cant afford the equipment. The light vehicles will be next, I have heard by the end of 2023. It will be the end of our hobby unless there are exemptions for classic cars. To be forced to do inspections on vehicles that do such low mileage when most of us maintain our classic cars much better than anything else on the road is almost criminal.

Wow!. My son moved to PEI and got the mandatory safety inspection yesterday. He got the inspection, a needed wiper blade and brake light bulb plus an oil change. Total bill was $90..

That will never happen, only good news about license rebates, "then the other shoe drops" after election!! If they brought out a yearly inspection like WV has, visual only and costs about $40 bucks I could live with that & keep the $ 500 + inspection for license transfers to new owners??? But that makes sense so it won't happen!!

The thing that gets me is the tires. Both my old cars have like new tires. One set dated 2011 and the other 2013. Unfortunately one car has 5:25/16 tires, really hard to get and expensive. Also I have winter tires on wheels for my pickup and my wifes car. Both vehicles are 2015. If the inspection requires tires to be less than five years old its going to be expensive for a lot of people. If you run winter tires four or five months a year most people wouldnt come close to wearing tires out in five years.

Running old tires is like signing your own death warrant. I changed perfectly good tread tires on my LeMans, GMC Suburban and Corvette last spring. Best money you can spend to make sure you and others on road are safe. Rubber hardens with age and is no longer effective at adhesion.

One big problem buying new tires is that they can be 4 years old or even older, from sitting in warehouse!! Especially if there not a popular size. Heard yesterday that a friend got 4 "new" 13" Coker tires with wrapping still on them and were "rotten" Replacement set was the same, getting credit and told to throw them out! Guess you have to make sure of dates before garage installs them or you just spent a lot of $$ for "old tires"

Are they making this a yearly thing or just when you buy a car? If it's just when you buy it won't be an issue regarding tires.

In Ontario we already have a safety inspection when purchasing a car, regardless of the age of the vehicle.

I agree with you that old tires may blow without warning. The time limit has been 10 years providing the tire doesnt show weather cracking or other defects such as tread separation. My concern was the five year limit if it does become law. I think it still legal to sell new tires up to three years after the manufacture date. When I was still working one of the trucks in our fleet needed four rear tires. The boss ordered retreads, common in the truck world for drive and trailer tires. The 11R-22.5 retreads that arrived had a date code showing the tire casing being over twenty years old! I called the tire dealer and was assured they would be okay. I even received a set that had been retreaded and the casing was weather checked, again I was told they were fine, but I refused them.

Wild thought?

How about slow moving vehicle triangle. Speed limited to 40 km/hr.

I dont have a problem replacing tires at the ten year mark. It was the five year replacement comment that irked me in the first post.

I'm aware of the one time safety when you buy a car (I lived in Ontario for 45 years) but what I am curious is if this new program will require yearly safeties? If not, the only time you need to worry about tire age is when you buy a used car.

We have yearly inspections here in PEI. The basics are checked- rust issues, suspension, brakes, lights etc. $35.00. NB and NS are every two years. We do need annual or bi-annual inspections here as we have a huge corrosion problem.

That's a far cry from the estimated $ 500 for Ontario!!  That's more inline with the WV one I mentioned!

Only other one is for vehicle from out of province trying to register in BC.

Ontario has had tax on private sales for years & use data in computer to assess tax value,[ over 35 yrs, you have to get appraisal] so "low ball" bill of sale doesn't work. If you dispute value you go get it appraised, then they take the higher value, either, appraisal, computer, or bill of sale, so you get screwed anyway. This happened to nieghbour on 2014 F150 after dispute with computer value, paid for appraisal, lic office then took their value as bill & appr. were lower!!
