June 2022 Feature Car


Despite the fact CP Member Kevin Toohey's username is 70 SS Acadian, he also is a fan of the 1966 full sized Canadian Pontiacs and he owns more than one. Kevin recently purchased this incredible one owner 66 Parisienne Custom Sport from the original owner. Finds like are getting harder and harder to find. The big block under the hood is icing on the cake. Kevin tells us more:

 

Back in March or so of this year member Cdnpont (Mark) spotted what appeared to be a very nice  1966 Parisienne Custom Sport 396 on Kijiji, It was posted here at the time and really sparked my interest. The car was in Morrisburg Ontario.

It was advertised as a original owner car, 396 TH400. Who keeps a car this long? Incredible! I got the vin from the seller and bought the VVS doc to confirm originality and saw it was sold in Quebec through Cyr's auto sales in Magog.

The Protecto plate and sales documents (still in glovebox) showed that indeed the fellow was the original owner since 66!

Surprisingly the car stayed up for sale for a long time. I contacted the owner and made arrangements to head up to view the car, a 4 hour drive each way. Mark and I shared the drive.

On arrival the owner opened a garage and there it was. He said it hadn't moved in a few years and it looked it, covered in dust.

We gave the Qjet a fill of fuel through the vent and went to start it expecting the worst. The engine fired right up with no drama and other than a leaky doughnut ran really nice eventually settling down to a smooth idle. Impressive.

After looking over and under the car it was obvious we were looking at a true survivor. A deal was quickly made with the owner and we headed home promising to return when he was ready to bring the car out..

A few weeks later we returned with a trailer. We started the car and eased it out into the light under the watchful (and likely sad) eye of the owner. It moved just fine and sounded nice. 

 

We put it on the trailer in one go, strapped it down, and headed home. Surely it made for a good show for everyone while passing through along the busy 401.

I left it at Marks for a little bit. He gave it a quick clean and I had it registered and insured. Mark played with it on the roads blowing the cobwebs out. He reported that yes, it does actually spin the tires easily!

The interior is in decent shape. Not sunbaked like an outdoor car would have been. All the weatherstripping has to be changed though. Aftermarket Tach certainly looks the part.

Mark and I even managed to make a trip up to spring Ancaster. Perfect day and a good chance to give her some needed exercise.

I had the car up and inspected by my mechanic  and it needs nothing in the front end and the brakes are fine. It's good to go. I went and cleaned out the rats nest of alarm wires and the James Bond style toggle switches in the console ashtray. He had it configured that the taillights could be turned off but nothing else made much sense to me. I suspect that he probably did some crazy stuff years back in this car. I took off those old school GE Tractor lights. I know they are period and everyone seemed to do this but they are way too ugly for me. Neat take on the addition of 68 sidemarkers as door safety lights. Factory looking imop.

The plan is to basically leave it mostly alone. Perhaps clean up the motor, replace the hoses and belts, tune it up, and dump the yellow wires. I'm going to replace the valve cover gaskets for sure and detail the body and interior. Next I'll install some nice day two wheels on it and just drive it.

All in all it's a nice find and proof nice original big block cars are still out there hidden away waiting...

So that's what you've been up to! When it comes to 66 396 cars Kevin reminds me of an old Jack Benny sketch where a guy asks Benny why he is is the way he is, as he already has lots of money and Jack just chuckles and says "yeah but I don't have all of it yet!

Eventually... eh?

 

I have to say I couldn't have passed that up either. Most of those big block cars have stories and this one does for sure!

 the price of an LS6 kept jumping up faster then I could catch up so in 2006 I ordered an 07 Shelby. all the comfort features in a faster car with warranty and cheaper.

I kept thinking "this car reminds me of someone's car" and now I remember!

When I was a teenager working at the Texaco a guy in town had the identical car except of course it was a 283 powerglide.

Cant remember from one minute to the next.  Looked at the GM docs and even enlarged the screen, did a quick memory check and presto forgot by the time I posted my above comment.

I studied both cars parked at Marks and didnt see an antenna on the  passenger fender on Kevin's car then looked up the GM docs.  Sure enough U63
