Collecting Canadian Sales taxes from eBay Canada-based Buyers

Just got this from E-Bay.

Dear eBay Canada Buyer,

Due to legislative changes in Canada's tax laws,

eBay will be required to charge and collect Canadian GST/HST, QST, and PST on applicable sales to Canada-based buyers, effective July 1, 2022.

Please note that these changes will affect most e-commerce companies that operate in Canada.

Starting on July 1, 2022, for all sales of tangible goods sold within Canada,

eBay will be collecting the Canadian sales taxes (GST/HST/QST/ PST) from Canada-based buyers on behalf of Canada-based sellers

(irrespective of their tax registration status) and remitting the tax to the appropriate tax authorities.

eBay will also be responsible for collection of the Canadian sales taxes on supplies to

Canada-based buyers of digitally downloaded goods, including sales from non-Canadian sellers.

To ensure that the correct amount of tax is applied on your eBay purchases,

please confirm that your account information is up to date.

Upon the launch of this sales tax implementation, eBay won't be able to support and accept exemptions

for buyers who qualify for the First Nations or resale exemptions. First Nations buyers can apply for a rebate to the CRA on exempt purchases. For provincial exemptions, buyers can go to the respective tax authority for a refund.

eBay's Terms & Conditions have been will be updated to implement these changes

and provide for compliance with applicable laws.

Additional information about the federal measures can be found at the CRA site or

by calling their hotline: Notification and information reporting: GST/HST for digital economy businesses - Canada.ca

Please consult with your tax advisor if you have specific questions or concerns about these changes.

As always, thank you for buying on eBay.
The eBay Canada Team

I knew it was coming. Online companies being forced to collect sales taxes due to online sales of their members that do not have a business. I dont have a problem with it really, vendors with a business and sell new parts sometimes collect sales taxes.
I also read somewhere that the governments want control of digital currency so purchases can be tracked and apply taxes. If digital currency becomes mainstream there wont be any more flea markets, yard sales or cash sales.

I might buy one or two things a year on Ebay now and mostly because of what you stated George.

i still by lots from ebay but only if seller uses the global shipping program their rates are pretty good, just got a aluminium rad from states and shipping was only $32 cant get a big envelope shipped here for that plus if you are buying more than one item from seller global charges the initial shipping charge then other items r usually only a couple dollars more

I'm in agreeance.  But EBAY is the one pushing the ticket. I bought some parts out of California late last year (Covid year). The seller charged me sales tax. I managed to find the seller's phone number and called them.

They told me that EBAY was forcing them to collect the taxes, Ebay was setting the shipping rates and Ebay would take up to 4 weeks to pass the $$ on to the seller. The seller told me they were "done with Ebay", this is my last sale, losing $$ and overall, customers too.

I don't even bother anymore buying on the site. Most sellers are going to FB.....

Another case of the "Big guy" thinking they have control. I would imagine all these changes will have a tremendous influence on the sales....

Taxes often get collected by the shipper like fedex or Canada Post, just not every time. I never buy on eBay unless no other option. EBay has been finding ways to screw everyone for years. I do a search for something, check it out on eBay from search results, then see if I can buy elsewhere.

I had an incident with them when I bought my shop manuals for the Buick. One of the manuals that arrived were wrong. I contacted the seller and he said the only way to provide the proper one was to list it on eBay for 50 cents and he'd refund the 50 cents. He also said to keep the wrong manual. He listed the proper manual and I purchased it for 50 cents. I noticed I was also being charged $14 for shipping. I asked the seller if he was also going to refund the additional $14 for shipping. He said "What $14?". He sent me a screen shot of the auction and it had free shipping on his end. On my end it showed $14. Turns out eBay charged me the $14 for their global shipping program. Apparently the sellers in the US send international items to a specific location and then eBay handles the rest of it. I couldn't be bothered fighting with eBay for the $14. Does anyone need an electrical manual for a 93 Buick LeSabre/Park Ave?
