1966 Fuel Pump for 396 or 427


When I rebuilt my 427 a few years ago, I wanted an original looking fuel pump but wasn't eager to pay the price for NOS. The fittings on the 66 pump didn't carry over into 67, so in Canada it was a unique pump. I think the US cars with a 396 in 65 used the 66 style pump but of course we never had them here. 

I bought an Airtex 40193. Apparently Airtex was the manufacturer for AC Delco pumps. The Airtex is a dead ringer for the Delco pump without the AC logo on the casting. 

Decided I should buy a spare. Ordered one a few month ago and it came with totally wrong fittings, it would require modification to both the inlet and outlet line on the car to make it work. Figured wrong part in box, ordered a second, same thing. Contacted a vendor who said that's how they come now.

Kept digging, found Spectra (Canadian company) shows original style still. Ordered it, got them yesterday. Fittings look great but check out the spacer plate it requires (included in the box). I've never seen anything like it. The Airtex and the OEM pumps never used that. Interesting. It should work but it's a new one for me. Anyone seen this before?

I CHANGED A PUMP ON A 72 1 TON YEARS AGO.

THE GUY BEFORE ME PUT ON A SMALL BLOCK PUMP.

IT NEVER HAD ENOUGH LENGTH ON THE ARM.

WENT A BIG BLOCK PUMP , WORKED FINE.

JUST A GUESS BUT THE SPACER , FOR BIG OR SMALL BLOCK FIT ??

Carl, that's a little odd. Looks like a "leaker" to start.
I needed one I January. I had a mint one on the car, tried to remove the fuel line to do work on the front of the engine and the brass fitting separated from the pump the line was on so tight!
I looked up the GM #, google it and bought one from Amazz Com for $24 USD delivered to me in Florida.

I'd be sending that one back...If you want my info PM me

 Looks like a Carter M4514...  You just have to watch the angles on the feed line from the tank, they play with different angles on the pumps.

Try and cross reference it Carl and then go thru the list to find the cheapest. Only a few make that pump, but it will show up under another suppliers part #

 Kevin, that one has the flare fitting for the line to the carb. The correct 66 pump and line are like the pieces I brought you last fall for the 396. On  1966 only, the pump outlet fitting is pipe thread. A brass elbow screws into the pipe thread fitting on the pump, and the line screws into the elbow which is flared. The one you pictured is correct for 67 but if you put that on a 66 I'll mock you when I am at your house. biggrin

 The M4514 female fitting is flared for the tube to thread in. For 1966 it should be female pipe thread to accommodate a brass fitting.

This is how the female fitting needs to look inside. In Kevin's you can see it's an inverted flare fitting.

This is exactly the pump I am looking for. The brass fitting in this picture threads into the female pipe thread fitting in the pump, then the line into the fitting. The brass fitting will NOT thread into a pump with an female inverted flare fitting.

ok now i see the difference. I will have to leave my air condition house at first day light to check out what i have . The impala has a tube with a 90 bent in it so thats why the pump worked. Clearly wrong

The corvette guy$ likely have these, they has a 396 in 65? Or Carl, try the original one that came on the non fake motor ?

 I only got the bare block I'm afraid, it had no parts with it.

1967 Impala convert. 283, glide. Parked in the garage since 74 and hasn't moved. Soon to be BB 4speed.
