Yes, same principal, the harder you pull the harder it grips.

You bet, on mine it's a 1/2" ratchet. Actually when it's an issue I use the 1/2" bar.

When I bought my 1970 2+2 hardtop in 1999 (it only had 21000 miles on it) it's oil filter wouldn't come off. I tried every trick in the book, including a strap wrench like 4SPEED427 showed which just collapsed the filter. The old trick of driving a screwdriver through it didn't work either, as the filter soon started to tear apart.

I finally tore the entire case of the filter and element apart, so just the filter base remained. I had a couple of longer punches, placed their bases inside a 1" deep socket, and poked the tips of the punches into holes of the filter base. Then using a screwdriver I was able to get between the punches to turn it. Finally the filter base broke loose, then easily spun off.

What Clint mentioned above=I drive a big screwdriver through the filter and turn in off-good luck Kevin-you probably have a lift-I remember one time laying underneath on a cement floor-fighting with an oil filter-I finally won.
Keep on Cruising!

I also have one of these oil filter wrenches. The problem is it only fits one size of filter. I once had a GMC three ton in the shop and someone put the oil filter on dry. I put my feet against the front axle and had a breaker bar on the filter wrench. I lifted myself of off the creeper pulling so hard but the filter came loose.

and the winner is........ Clint. yes the filter tore off at the base. Two screw drivers up into the holes and a pry bar between them. the pry bar is 18" long and it still took a lot of force to move it. Now to put new filter on , fill with oil and go for a spinsmile

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  Glad it worked.

Remember to grease the gasket and don't use a bar to tighten the filter!!! biggrin

Agreed, and when the can broke loose from the base it was hammer and chisel time. That was a while ago and I know frustration was getting the better of me. Its a tight fit in there but somehow I managed to get enough of a swing at it to break it loose without breaking anything else or damaging the gasket surface!

One thing I forgot to mention about this one and you may have already figured out when you were working with it. Always make sure you slide it up as far to the filter base as you possibly can.

after running the car down the road i had a bit of an oil leak so filter may not be tight enough. I never jacked it up to see where it was coming from. I was happy it was running and i needed to get on the mower. Oh and I did spin the tires in the driveway, Mark will want proof it past the test

I've always been glad mine was never modified for spin on ones. The canister filter has so much more capacity.
