Greetings. '59 Laurentian has had carburetor intermittent oddness for the time that I've owned it - 4ish years. A couple of times, float has stuck (I think) as it began to run rough just after a cold start. Noticed fuel pouring down the carburetor from the gasket between bowl and air horn. A smack with a wrench and installation of a fire extinguisher under the dash has put that right.
More concerning and more frequently, it will momentarily run rough and sometimes stall when coming to a stop with clutch in. The more abrupt the stop, the more drastic the symptom.
Most problematic symptom - one can be cruising in any gear and letting foot off Accelerator with clutch out can set up sort of an oscillation, lurch lurch lurch. Looks like someone learning to drive standard for the first time.
Problem directly proportional to the movement of the car, or change in movement I suppose.
I carefully disassembled carburetor, ultrasonically cleaned, blew out passages. Carefully reassembled with a high quality kit following '58, '59, '59-'60 manuals as well as instructions with the kit. Even with new needle and seat, float levels were spot on with no adjustments.
Surgy buckle oddness remains although idle smoother and responds well to mixture adjustment.
Some research shows these were prone to warping and as a result both internal and external leaks.
Some specific examples with behavior similar to mine were attributed to this.
I am at a loss and welcome any thoughts, ideas, past experiences, etc.
*Sincere thanks*
Robert

Robert you probably don't want the hear this but I would highly recommend getting an Autoline rebuilt carburetor. They do so well. Those carburetors are actually flow tested. It's not just put a kit in them and shove them out the door. Over the years I've seen a number of times where an older carburetor just couldn't be made to work right for nothing. An exchange carburetor solved the problem.

Id first check fuel pump pressure and see if its putting out more than 4.5 , Ive bought new pumps that put out 15lbs.

Mahone Bay, NS Still not old enough to need an automatic
Many thanks gents. Carl, I'm not averse to going with an autoline rebuild. I wonder, is a core mandatory? I'd like to keep mine... How do I order? Rock Auto lists Autoline with a 7 day delay so I imagine it would be going from Winnipeg to Vancouver via California.
Don, I'll definitely check fuel pressure. It's an ancient OEM looking one but doesn't mean it can't be overdoing it..
All the best

Robert, since its an old pump its likely fine, its new parts that are crap.

I did. It's on its way from Hong Kong.. Got purchase protection on the card I used in case it's a failure.
If you have a line on a proper rebuilt I'd very much like to follow through and I'd keep Chinese one as a spare.
You mustn't go to any trouble or rush.
Many thanks!

There was a video on YouTube where a guy bought a Chinese manufactured Chevy 2 barrel for a boat. The carb worked well out of the box. The only concern was that the throttle body on the original was cast iron and the replacement was aluminum. He wondered about the longevity of the aluminum vs the cast iron for slop appearing in the throttle shaft.
