F40 heavy duty suspension RPO


Hi all,

so the F40 RPO all our aussie cars got is for heavy duty front and rear suspension. I know that means 4 link and possible shockie ratings but what is the difference for front suspension over standard? Just shockie ratings?

The front sway bar is 15/16 inch diameter compared to 3/4 inch on the standard Parisienne suspension.

For whatever reason it's not always true that F40 cars have the big front bar. My car is an original F40 car, definitely never messed with and it had the small bar. I had to put the big one on. It seems odd but it's definitely true, I've seen other ones the same.

 I've stripped the large bars off numerous 65-70 Chevy and Pontiac B bodies. The Pontiacs were anything from Strato Chief to Parisienne, and the Chevys were Biscayne to Impala. That said, I have noticed that on a small number of Biscaynes  in particular - when they had a front sway bar (not all did) - they were much smaller than the larger bars. Bottom line: I don't know what that means. Maybe the lower end models were equipped with smaller bars than the Parisienne and Impala. It's a mystery.

The HD 15/16 sway bars are still out there  , and the rear are getting scarce . The 15/16th front sway bar bushings #3903084 are one of the hardest bushings to find. `

any given RPO could be used on a myriad of car lines, over multiple model years;
The precise equipment installed as a result of an RPO is 100% specific to the model year AND the car model.

Quick way to measure your sway bar is with a box end wrench.

Slide it over the bar for a snug fit to get proper size.

Just now as I was reading this I realized I have the GM Vintage information package here for a car I got documented for a friend. He wanted a 66 full size Chevy documented. I thought I would read through there and see what it says about F40 on the 66 Chevys. However as I started reading through this I soon realized it is not Canadian information, it's US information so I don't know how pertinent that is.

One error I noticed immediately is it says all the front bars on cars except wagons are 13/16" and all wagons are 15/16". That for sure is not accurate in the US. I've looked at many 66 full size Chevy wagons in wrecking yards in the US and probably only found two of them with the big bars on the front.

Any time this discussion comes up it seems like there is no clear cut solution!

 I dunno about that, if you look at the F60 and  F58 options, I reckon they might be the F40 front HD options .....now I am curious what the F41 options entail....

F40, (not to be confused with F41 which was the ride and handling option) was a heavy duty option for towing or heavy loads that lifted the car, basically wagon suspension. It was common on Canadian cars, probably because it increased ground clearance for snowy days.
