It’s Over August 30/22- Sailing from Norway to Nova Scotia via Faeroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Nfld July- August

My friend and neighbor Jim is sailing his boat from Norway to Mahone Bay, leaving any day now when the weather looks best. He told me originally he expected the trip to take 3-4 weeks depending on fair winds.

If you are curious, he will post his progress here.

So he left today a few hours ago. Its a cool site, it shows the lat and long position, current speed, updates hourly. The graphic shows wind direction, if your go to the link you can touch the screen anywhere and it gives you wind direction and speed.
Hes headed to the Faeroe Islands, about 2000kms, maybe Thursday.

He updated his site.

Monday evening
Mon Jul 18 2022
28 hours after departure winds and seas are moderating. Wind dropped from 25 kts to 7, seas from 3 meters to 2. Motor sailing as close to wind as we can, were 40 miles off the direct course, forced north by the SW wind. Gannets, shearwaters and dolphins. Otherwise empty. A few ships at the coast, none out here. Any moves in the cabin are necessarily acrobatic in the lively motion. Looks like well have a nice sunset, but heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow.

Jim spent a few days in the Faeroes, sounds like he enjoyed it a lot. Winds have not looked favourable and they headed out yesterday to Iceland. He posted this today.

To Iceland
Sat Jul 23 2022
Timed our passage to Vestmanna according to current charts in Arctic Pilot book and calculations based on high water Dover. Late afternoon at Vestmanna we tied up to dock, looked again at forecast and decided best to have a nap, make a big dinner, and depart for Iceland right after. With near zero wind we motored out, passing fantastic cliffs and caves, with sheep grazing somehow on slopes you wouldnt think possible, and a few houses (to say they are remote is an understatement; no roads and little obvious access by boat). As I write this morning we are about 70 miles out, with 270 to go to reach Vestmannaeyjar, a small island harbour south of Iceland. If there werent clouds astern seems possible wed still see the Faeroes peaks. A light wind is ESE dead astern so motoring, and rolling in the swells. Wind should back to NE by midnight, giving us a good sailing angle. Clear and sunny. A half dozen fulmars are escorting us, hoping that our way through the water turns up some squid to feed on. Quite empty out here; a fishing boat on AIS last night, and just now a big ketch going opposite direction.

Today headed to Iceland, thats it in the map, new progress post.

Sunday morning

Little to report. Have had a ESE wind 9-12 kts for last 24 hours pushing us along with engine at low revs, full main and staysail. Some rolling and an occasional steeper swell but otherwise a very comfortable ride. A full dinner at the table last night. Glad our forecasting motivated us to leave when we did, as gale winds hit Faeroes later the next day. No other traffic out here since the ketch yesterday. 150 miles to Vestmannaeyjar, so arrival there sometime late afternoon tomorrow. No whale sightings. No porpoises. Most of the fulmars seem to have abandoned us; a remaining one ranges out a few hundred meters and then zooms back; great flyers. Did some mathwe have made 600 miles, so about 20% of the 3000 mile way home. We average 120 miles a day.C8E07910-2FCE-47F7-AC3F-062576D1C70E.png

He is near Iceland now. The wind has been very fickle.

Running out

of adjectives (dynamic, changeable, volatile, surprising, unstable, mixed-up). Turned in at end my watch 0200 with calm sea, clear sky (but no stars too much light post-sunset/pre-sunrise at 63 degrees North) and a sliver of a moon. Arose at 0600 after some rain and now with fog shrouding the mountains, coast and islands. An hour later fog lifts, sun comes out and by unanimous vote the island we had decided to bypass looked too tempting to missa video game developers vision of fantasy islands. Threaded our way toward harbor entrance, called harbour master for permission to land for an hour, and tied up. An hour later after coffee, scones and fresh bread purchase at bakery, we departed. Big fishing port, with shipyard, fish plants, offices, storage tanks, ferry dock; a large part of town got buried in 1973 volcano eruption. Brown cindery cone of volcano looms above town. Flocks of fulmars, puffins, gullsa few gannets and guilimots. The fantastic steep cliffs covered with guano from the nesting sitesand again sheep grazing on seemingly near vertical slopes. Vestmannaeyjar is among a cluster of volcanic islands and rocks extending over 15 miles, now behind us to port. To starboard are volcanoes and rounder snow covered mountains of the south coast. Were taking advantage of an expected wind shift later today to get us around to Reykjavik by sometime tomorrow. A side note: Icelandic officialdom requires incoming traffic to notify search and rescue ahead by radio or email with info on destination, how many aboard, passports, etc. Got immediate response to my email from SAR, then customs sent documents to download. Impressive!

Hes been in Iceland a day or 2, if you look at the map, you can see Iceland, Greenland, and Nfld.

Reykjavik day 2

Not much to report. Maintenance workchanging belt on engine, getting heater serviced, etc. Another Canadian boat arrived from Greenland; reported passage clear of ice. Met with our weather routing consultant meteorologist on what to expect. Walked around the port. Great dinner of Ling, Wolf fish and Arctic char. A number of other tasks to do before departure, including topping up our fuel tanks. Might leave as soon as Sunday.

Hes still in Iceland and posted this. Ice is exciting, hes having another local experienced sailor fly in from Mahone Bay to help navigate to Greenland. I like my boating close to land, warm weather, and especially no ice.

Reykjavik continued
Sat Jul 30 2022
It was unclear how we would get diesel fuel here but after waiting 3 days the head of the sailing club where we are docked made it happen and our tanks are full. After the briefing by our meteorologist consultant, it seemed wise to have another hand aboard for navigation through any ice fields and fog (the two often go together), so emailed Bill Scott in Mahone Bay. He will be here Tuesday morning, and well depart as soon we have a good forecast. A Belgian boat arrived here from Greenland. Theyd wintered in Quebec City and sailed along the north shore of the St. Lawrence, the west coast of Newfoundland, and from Battle Harbour, Labrador to Greenland. We met with them today and got much useful info on ice, fog, anchorages, ports. With some pounds left over from our 2018 winter in London we bought their no-longer-needed long sharpened aluminum pipe for pushing away ice floes. Then on our agenda was the Reykjavik Maritime Museum today, plus some final provisioning. This happens to be the biggest holiday weekend so the streets are lively. Still quite cool (12c) but mostly sunny.

Another update, sounds like the future is difficult to figure out.

...and continued

Tomorrow morning Bill Scott is to arrive here from Nova Scotia via Toronto. Today is another day of brisk north winds (a local says it can go on for days), but mostly sunny and very clear with mountains visible for miles. Walked the town yesterday and happened upon an organ recital at the big modern cathedral. We acquired a 600-ft coil of 5/8 polypropylene line from the Belgian boat for when anchoring to also tie to shore. Doing other small tasks to be ready, and also how to accommodate 3 people in a boat built for two. A Dutch boat just arrived from Svalbard 1000 miles north, heading next to Faeroes. Two 21m expedition yachts have been here for several days, hoping to go to Scoresby Sound, well up the Greenland coast, but now are replanning as its blocked with ice. A 70 ft British military expedition yacht tried last week and returned unsuccessful. We are hoping to depart late tomorrow after swells moderate some from their current 3-3.5mand make for Prins Christian Sund, a passage through the mountains just above the southern tip of Greenland. Hopefully attached below is an example of our weather routing model, showing 6 very different courses. As our advisor says, though, any forecast beyond 3 days is very speculative, so en route well be updating a few times a day, and getting guidance from him every day by email.75D4B3DE-351B-4DD0-BC18-850277C2FEBC.jpeg

Left Iceland last evening local time.

At sea

Bill arrived aboard at noon. After laundry, last shopping, filling water tanks, last preparations, and a dinner aboard with fish cakeswe departed Reykjavik at 8pm. Various cruise, cargo and fishing traffic, then empty ocean. Great view of shore, with very prominent volcano cone receding in distance. Wind on the beam, we bowled along at 7 knots and low revs on engine. Steep seas due to 15 knots of wind blowing south versus 1 to even 2 knots of current flowing north. For first 8 hours heeled at 15 degrees, and up to 30. Decided on 4 hour watches7CD5EB4A-9BDA-46F6-BEB7-CB4E7B9B22C8.png

Jim updated  again, he said hes traveling through an area 3000 meters/10,000 ft. The CN Tower is 1800 ft.

Wednesday evening

After a boisterous night the wind and seas today gradually moderated. Now swells are only 1 to 2 meters and wind has dropped to 5 kts. We motor on, maintaining our speed above 5 kts, with wind astern and the sails just damping our rolling. A day out from Iceland, we are crossing the Denmark Strait, infamous for its weather. In WW2, many convoys had a rough time crossing it in appalling conditions while at risk of Uboat attack. As deep as 3000 meters, it has circular currents we have to cross, such as one our chartplotter says is 2.2 knots setting us northwest as we steer southwest. When currents are opposite the wind it makes for lively times like last night. For us at the moment its benign enough that Bill made a sit-down dinner of traditional bangers and mash. Only one ship today, a big trawler. Gannets, fulmars, puffins, guillemots. Heading toward clouds. After all the spray flying last night maybe rain tomorrow will wash the dried salt crystals off our deck.

All in a day

This morning the wind diminished to 5 knots and the sea flattened out. With wind behind at same speed as the boat was motoring, and not much swell running (<1m) the sails werent needed even for damping our rolling, so furled them. Sunny enough that Bill sat out in the cockpit enjoying the scene and warmthuntil it soon clouded over. Calm enough for Gunnar to start preparing a fish ball soup. Gradually the NE wind went around to E and then SE, building as it shifted but giving us a great beam reach. We even set the genoa. Butduring the afternoon the SE wind increased and seas built up from the south, giving us a very lively motion, so at 1700 we furled the genoa, and reduced speed to make cooking somewhat easier. At 2100 we reeled in half of the mainsail, and now at 2330 we are rolling between 0 and 25 degrees to starboard, seas are busy, spray is flying. Gunnar earlier had said the boat was like a train on a track, moving ever forward. Now Id say its a train that climbs a 2 meter slope every 6-7 seconds, and dives down the backside. No ships, a couple fulmars. Grey skies, some rain. 52 hours into what should be a bit more than a five day passage. Yesterday was our second best days run 134 miles. (Best was 140 when crossing the Bay of Biscay in 2015,)A8F0B809-B486-41D7-A126-B7A40856C6E8.png

Its getting exciting, read this one. Will soon be traveling through a Greenland fiord and avoiding ice falling off the glacier at the sides.

Fri Aug 05 2022
The weather in the Denmark Strait seems remarkably changeable. We get a briefing early each morning from our meteorologist consultant advising us on conditions ahead. We download weather model updates every 6 hours or so, each one often quite different. We had some calm periods this morning, which we took advantage of to tighten a belt on the engine and cook a lentil stew. Then we set all sail for a sunny afternoon until the wind rapidly increased & we took in the genoa plus half the main. Decided to heave to in order to have a sit-down dinner (remarkably the third in 3 days). Now with wind dead ahead and growing seas, were off our course line, bashing ahead, but per the latest forecast it might help us thread a path through or between a couple lows tomorrow and Sunday. We made our first report via email required by Greenland all vessels entering its waters, starting 250 miles out, must file reports every 6 hours of position, crew, destination, course and local weather and ice conditions. If the report is more than 30 minutes late and the maritime office cant reach you, they may start SAR activity. We are 170 miles from the nearest land and 250 from the entrance to Prins Christian Sund, a passage through fjords that avoids the dangers of Greenlands southern Cape Farvel. Nearing the coast, starting about 75 miles out, well have to watch for icebergs and sea ice coming south with the East Greenland current. All recent reports say that entrance to the Sund is clear of ice. Within the passage there will be ice calving off its glaciers. Weve made good runs the first 3 days (134, 130, 125 miles) but it may take us a day longer than expected to reach the Sund entrance, given the winds and seas working against us the next few days

If the entire 2,850,000 cubic kilometres (684,000 cu mi) of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 m (24 ft). The Greenland Ice Sheet is sometimes referred to under the term inland ice, or its Danish equivalent, indlandsis.

Found a Cdn website that tracks ice and icebergs off Labrador, likely mostly for oil and gas.

https://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/prods/WIS65/20220807000000_WIS65_0012214055.pdf

The number inside the rectangles formed by latitude and longitude are the number of icebergs in that rectangle, one has 63. This is west of Greenland, havent found a similar chart for Greenland yet.
