Yes, the official car of Morris MB. Theory question please, applicable to any manufacturer I should think.

Above mentioned has heads redone, block is a bit of a question mark - a guy said that a guy said that a guy's brother rebuilt it.

Chasing driveability problems, runability problems I suppose. Had a stuck heat riser, was super heating carb and manifold. Points contaminated, one bad wire, corrosion in distributer cap.

All of this had been taken care of and it runs markedly better.

Timing calls for 6 deg BTDC but it will not run there. Or, does barely. Last timing mark is 10 BTDC. It will run decently with timing mark about an inch past 10 BTDC. So, way, way advanced.

Engine struggles to produce 15" HG, service manual wants minimum 18"

There are no vacuum leaks, I smoke tested. Tried another carb. from a parts car, still the same.

I know my query is terribly vague and engine is a bit of a cat in a bag, but I'd sure appreciate guidance on anything that jumps out at anyone....help with theory, my thinking, etc.

Sincere thanks

Robert Meyers

Balancer has slipped so the timing mark is way off maybe?

Thank you

I will check #1 piston height vs.  0 deg BTDC and report back.

Awfully appreciated

When I was working as an apprentice in the 70s an elderly customer brought in a 1961 Mercury Comet for a squealing fan belt.  When I removed the tan belt the outer ring of the harmonic balancer fell on the floor! The fan belt was fine, the balancer spinning was the noise. I have seen many that have moved causing timing issues. I would put the vacuum gauge on it and slowly advance the timing to see if you can get the vacuum reading up in the correct range. If you can get a good vacuum reading, take it for a drive and if the engine pings retard the timing until the pinging stops.

Shot in the dark here... any chance it's off a tooth on the timing chain?  The reason I'm thinking that is perhaps the intake valves could be a little late in closing, preventing cylinder pressure from reaching its peak.  Does it seem sluggish at low rpm, for example, and then seem to take off as the rpms rise?

Like I said... just a shot in the dark.  I don't have any experience with those engines.

Would like to see some pics of the car, though... smile

What do the plugs look like?

In addition to above good thoughts, could be the valves are carboned up? Has this car been run only around the metropolis of Morris at max 80kph?

Id try running it off a portable gas tank with a big load of something like Seafoam. I bought a portable 10 L marine gas tank for playing with outboards and 283s that may have bad fuel/running issues where I want a high mix of Seafoam and 91 clean fuel. My boat has a 63US gallon fuel tank, so easier to clean out valves and carbs/fuel injectors with the small tank. The marine fuel line has a bulb to pump fuel pressure into a dry carb too, I just hook it to the inlet side of the fuel pump.

1960 Thunderbird 352 Update

Firstly, heartfelt thanks for ideas and discussion - helped me to get the gray matter going..

Instead of us standing around staring at it like the guys on king of the hill, we dug into it and tore the front of the engine apart. Lots of work for a maybe but had to be done..

No smoking gun per say.. cam and crank gears looked in phase, but we were met with quite a sloppy chain.. Fit new chain and gears, checked checked and rechecked marks, assembled all.

We have a much happier car, vacuum up around 18"HG, runs well at 6 BTDC.  Whew....

Thanks again everyone for online brainstorming.

Robert

I never thought about it before, how the heck do you work on the water pump/timing chain area on a car with one of those reverse opening hoods?

Hood has been off that car more than a few times whilst in our care.

Heavy dang thing...

Ok, I figured that must be the solution.

Glad you got it sorted out.  Nice looking T-bird!  Always liked that generation.
