My new NOS Part :)

A NOS Part,

Hi all,

My long-awaited new part has arrived. Its a tail light assembly for my 65 Pontiac wagon. I have been looking for seven years for this part and it was more than happy to find one on eBay and shell out the 250 bucks.

The ad didnt say NOS but boy was I happy to see something so shiny from last century.

what also surprised me was it was in the original box. I was so happy looking at that box the family couldnt believe it, they were actually quite amused at my awe they will never understand the joy of getting a vintage box with a vintage part. But I know some of you would.

So this tail light has some gummy material that has gotten way too hard around it. Its not your normal gasket.

Does anybody know what this once gummy material actually is? I think I could just use butyl, but its a strange looking material more like Oakum.

thanks for any advice

Bob

Not something you'll find very often. Or maybe even ever again.

Nice find.

Wow. what I wouldn't give for a rear trim panel and lamps so pristine! You just never see them so nice.

I think the dum dum stuff is a early form of flexible polyurethane sealant that has petrified. You could replace it with a doubled up strip of windshield Butyl tape from Amazon. I can personally vouch for this product as being of very good quality.

that box is pre 1971(?);
those are GM colours from 1970 and earlier;
I believe they changed to the blue boxes somewhere around 1971 (please, someone correct me if I am wrong!)

I think I only have two parts in boxes with the old GM colours;
one of my NOS parts is even a pre-production NOS part applicable to my car, and it is in a blue box!
