HEI distributor w/external coil

Hi Everyone,

I hope October is offering up nice driving weather for you!

I've entered the world of no spark again. I have this 45-year-old HEI distributor and coil installed. I tested the coil with an Ohm meter (as well as jumping the spark) and it appears dead.

Most HEI distributors have the coil mounted on top of the/ inside the cap. In this one, the coil is mounted externally on the engine block. I pulled it off to try to find a part number. Found a giant crack down the back and only a faded part number. If I could find one easily/affordably, I'd go for that, so I can get the car ready for winter storage, after which I think I am going to convert it back to points. Or I could spend $185 and replace the Pertronix igniter in the distributor. Opinions?

Thanks!

I know Pertronix has its critics, but all I can say is I've had a Pertronix on the 250 in my 69 chevy pickup for about 18 years now and haven't had to touch the distributor yet.

yes, I think that is the norm. A high percentage of positive anecdotes from what I've heard.

And simple to install! Thanks for weighing in.

The coil is still available. Cheap from Rock Auto.

Super!

I looked all over. Forgot about Rock Auto. Thanks!

Roy

Edit: Ordered it. Shipping was twice the cost of the coil itself! Hopefully it will arrive in a week or so. Thanks, again!
