Randy, I bet you still have a strong childhood memory of laying flat, looking up through glass at night and seeing strange lights go whizzing by.

I do.

I'd say to everyone here,  if you're high 50's into your 60's, it's odds on you have too. Crazy!

The kid would have been warmed by that rear engine, but the sound probably made him grumpy. He wanted a V8.

I rode in the back of a pickup that was flat towing a stock car going to the races on Friday and Saturday nights. Loose tires, cans of gas and tool boxes in the back of the truck also.

I'm kind of half kidding. No pun.

Do the math. Families were 2-5 kids then, right? Today, 1-3, maybe. We can't afford to put them in danger anymore like we could then.

We are very luck Randy that we made it out alive. Phew!

Any other examples of the danger THEY subjected us to?

Both of my parents were smokers, especially in the car. Having both of them puffing away in the front while the three of us rolled around in the back seat choking on smoke and road dust should have done us in (considering my brother had Asthma as well) .

I used to wonder why I was always queasy on those long trips. That, and probably a leaky exhaust system allowing us to suck in lovely leaded gas fumes, I now realize reduced my potential IQ quite a bit.  Explains a lot.

Driving fast on those old 50s and 60s tires, lots of flats. Dad worked at a Toronto GM dealer in about 57, they had a trailer out back, ran there bald tires through there, cut new treads in them. Everyone drove in the back of pickups, towed vehicles on the highway with a chain. I learned to drive when I was 8, drove uncles farm gear, tractors and loaded trailers at 8, no brakes.

The survivors get to write history, we are still above ground.

I guess the ones that didn't survive couldn't tell their story...

Worked in a in Esso gas station going to school.  Got to wash and Blue Coral a lot of cars.

One customer insisted that we not clean the back window as the smoke film cut down the glare from the headlights behind him.

LOF every day and upselling at the pumps.  Oil check to sell fan belts, air cleaners, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid.

Those were the days.   Oh yes getting to do service calls with the tow truck. Heys 440 rig.

My parents were heavy smokers (hence both passed at age 60 from Lung Cancer) and my sister and I were subjected to heavy second hand smoke back then. Winter was the worst since the house and car would have the windows closed. Of course we had no idea why I'd get bad bronchitis every winter. My parents would host card parties and I still remember the thick cloud of smoke haze!

Its odd that neither me or my brothers ever took it up with it being so omnipresent back then. I guess we could see, even when we were young, that growing up in a thick cloud of smoke just can't be good for you.

Sounds familiar. My dad used to smoke 2 packs a day. He passed at 73 from you know what. Scottish, they would host many a party in a fog of smoke.

My dad hacking up a lung every morning and then continuing on with his 3 pack a day addiction was enough for me.  Always hated the stuff, never have been and never will be a smoker.
