Hello everybody! I have a 1957 Pontiac Chieftain. The car was setting a long time outside and needs lots of work. My problem at the moment, is that the fuel tank leaks in about 3 different spots. I would like to replace the tank, but have found out that nobody atleast to my knowledge reproduces the tank. Does anybody know if any other tanks will interchange? From the research that I did, this is a one year only tank. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
I did a little bit of searching on your request and I find the same thing you found. It appears the tank is one year only, fits US models only and Pontiac only. I suspect your best and only option will be to look for a used one from a nice dry climate. There's a number of wrecking yards in Arizona that specialize in older classic stuff. Some that come to mind are Desert Valley Auto Parts, Hidden Valley Auto Parts, Pontiac Heaven (Steve Barcak). I'm not sure if Frank's Pontiac Parts in California does 1957's but he might be worth a try also.

I'm not sure it will help anything but the GM parts book shows the part number as 523696. It says that fits all 1957 Pontiac models except station wagon (naturally).

Saw a site called Gas Tank Renu, no idea who they are but maybe someone else does. May have a dealer in your area?

In May 1988 Gas Tank Renu - USA, a Michigan Co-Partnership, was officially formed for the express purpose of selling Dealerships to be licensed in the technology for the process of repairing fuel and other holding tanks. The business has grown to the point that there are now 35 Dealers in the United States and 65 when combined with the affiliated companies in Canada.
Hi Don! Thanks for providing me with that information. I have checked out their company and found a dealer here in my state of Pennsylvania. It will cost between 300-400 depending on condition of the tank. That is about what an aftermarket tank costs and since they don't make an aftermarket tank for my car , I am most likely going to do it. The best part is it will never rust again which is a plus. It will be as good as a new tank only it will never rust! So, problem solved. Thanks again!

A friend of mine has a 1940 Ford that he restored years ago. He had trouble with the gas tank and used gas tank renu. About five years ago he bought a new tank to replace the original because it was giving him some trouble. It had been sealed inside and out but the material was peeling off of the inside plugging the fuel filter. He realized that the gas tank renu had lasted about 25 years before he started having problems. Pretty good service from the renu process in my opinion.
