66 GP. Autotrader, Bobcaygeon ON

There is just something about a black on red full size mid 60's GM. Appears to have the right stuff at a fair price. But I don't know the USA car.

Beautiful car. Kind of an oxymoron that it has the fuel economy (vacuum) gauge with that engine.

Is it a 389? As in 389 Tri power?

I would think its probably a 389. A 421 would be quite rare, especially a tri power.

So that is likely to be the original motor?

Tri power possibly added later?

Yeah, clear they don't know much about Yanqui Ponchos. No tri-power 389s, only the top-of-the-option-list 421 356 (hydraulic lifters) or 376 (solid) hp offerings. IF the car is as good as it looks, they're probably $10-$20 USD below market, although admittedly that's a bit of a falling knife.

Always liked that body style. Lost my left upper incisor on the right front fender of a '66 Strato Chief sedan in January of '67, in a snowball fight, but I don't hold that against the car!

I'm outta room.

Well I'll be, I learned something again today. So there's no 389 tri power on a 66 full size US model? 65 still had it though, right?

Beautiful car and priced fairly. Are you taking a road trip to Bobcageon Mark? I do know the owner (or an employee) of Lakeside registered here a few weeks ago. Perhaps he could tell us more?

Yes, that makes the US Pontiac guys angry! Kind of like the "Pontiac Beaumont" or "Pontiac Acadian" debate among Canadian Pontiac folks!

I knew the USA had their own Poncho VIN service. But will it tell you the specific engine?

I THINK so, but would need to do more research.  By '66, the only hi-po option in the big cars was the 421.  The GTO, of course, shackled by the 400 c.i.d. GM limit on B-bodies, still got it.

A lot of stuff was dealer-installed, but it's hard to imagine anyone paying all that money to put the tri-power set-up on a 389 if a 421 could be ordered from the factory with the same carburetion.

***on further examination, the 338 h.p. tri-carb 389 was offered in the '65 full-size B-body Pontiacs in the Land of the Brave, and the Home of the Free.***

Nice looking car.  I would think that tri-power setup would be worth a little in itself.
