What is this?

I got a bunch of stuff at an estate sale years ago and this was in there. What is it? Those 5 bars are stones like you'd use to sharpen a knife.

I think I might have asked about it here years back but if I did, I've long forgotten.

Do the steel rods have a "grit" to them like a file?

I didn't realize that until you asked but yes they do.

So I'm thinking the "rods" go in the aluminum stand to form a V. So 2 of the rods are the same grit, you slide the knife down the inside of the V on the left, then down the right side, alternating. This will be the final honing stage after using the coloured stones, which have different coarseness to them. (it may be very hard to tell)
Maybe goggle Whetstone grades, coarseness, knife sharpening....

Hmm, interesting. So the rods don't have grit on them for any purpose other than to hold them in place?

When I get a little bit of time I'll Google that, thanks.

No, the rods are used for "fine tuning" the edge. After you have used the whetstones...

The rods are attached to the stones with the thumb screws. The knife is held in the aluminum holder in the small recess at the end. The rods attached to the stones are used as a guide in the holder. The guide rods go into the slots on the holder. I think there are 4 or 5 slots that you can use for the different sharping angle on the knife blade.

63-7867..... He's got it figured better than I do. (I have the sharpener that uses the 2 rods in a V to sharpen)

But the case looks like it is missing a part on the left? A Handle maybe? Any brand name on the case?
