Missed us by 30 degrees

Not many folks know the sun is entering an active phase and at the same time the earths magnetic field is weakening. What this means is the risk of a coronal mass ejection causing damage to our electrical grid. With our magnetic field weakening (due to the magnetic poles shifting) weaker CME's carry the risk of doing more damage than they would have say 20 years ago. This week there have been a number of large sunspots facing earth and one created a massive CME spewing trillions of tons of particles into space. Had this happened directly facing earth we may have ended up using hand tools for a while.

Great video of the event:

Amazing stuff,
Our electrical infrastructure isnt that bulletproof, its just a matter of time before we get hit smack dab in the middle by one of them. There is a lot of theory being bandied about and I am in your camp. What fantastic footage. It will be interesting to see the scope of the damage when the time comes. Probably a wee bit more than y2k,
Thanks Todd,
Always interested in the big science stuff

When you realize the physics of it all it just boggles the mind. When you realize the overall grand design, well, it really makes you ponder things...

Think of lightning strikes and the constancy of the process of negative & positive being attracted. The earth little more than a charged particle to something as large as the sun, and when it throws off flares it affects things.

When you think of the improbability of the earth and it's inhabitants forming together, to be held in such a narrow window of conditions, you begin to realize we are not accidental. I mean, the ever so slight gravitational pull, the self-regulating nature of things... Either that, or its proteins.

As a kid I spend just about every Saturday in the movie theatres.

This Sci-Fi movie I recall every time I see a close up of the sun.

It had it all - Nuclear war, global warming, end of mankind...maybe.

"The Day the Earth Caught Fire" (1961).

I wish it were hype. I got back into amateur radio after a 30 year absense. A friend of mine back in Ontario encouraged me to get back into it for two reasons- the solar cylce (and increased solar winds) are creating fantastic atmospheric conditions for transmitting over long distances and mentioned I'd probably have good luck talking long distances being on the east coast. He was right. I have relatively low power output (35 watts) and have talked as far away as St. Lucia South Africa with my radio. Anyway, I follow a couple of brilliant fellows who give daily updates on solar conditions and the consensus is we will likely have a solar flare in the next 10 years that could take out the grid and potentially for years.

You may remember reading about the "Carrington Event" back in September 1859. The world wasn't dependent on electricity like we are now and all we really had was telegraph lines. Many of those telegraph poles caught fire during that flare event

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event

It's speculated a flare of lesser strength (thanks to the weakening magnetic field) could be extremely distructive. Imagine how popular those of us would be with vehicles without computers and with points distributors if such an event were to occur!

An interesting side note is it's also been proven that we see more severe weather (It wasn't long after a flare that hurricane Fiona sprung to life back in September) and earthquakes in the part of the world that a flare hits. It's a bit unsettling that most climate scientists aren't factoring what's going on with our magnetic field and the increased solar activity when talking about the strange weather we get these days.

These are good short daily video updates regarding solar conditions.

This guy is quite intellegent and you may not want to go down the rabbit hole of his channel to learn what he feels we may experience in the next 20 years.

I'm getting my hand tools ready, and I have two cars that will still run. Gas might be a problem though!

Yes. Best to go with an old school diesel vehicle as it won't go bad like gas will.

Most people don't know what a fragile existence we live in today.  Actually, we always have, we just didn't know it.

Between stuff like this, some huge asteroid colliding with the planet, diseases/viruses, nutcases with nuclear weapons available at the touch of a button, pollution, food additives, an internet full of 'experts' spreading misinformation for personal gain, space aliens, politicians... then there's all the stuff we don't know about.

Man, I need a drink - oh wait, that will kill me too!

Todd, might be time to convert your pickup to steam power.  That way you can run it by just burning stuff: wood, coal, diesel, cooking oil... whatever.  I always figured that steam would be the post-apocalyptic vehicle of choice, despite what all the Mad Max movies might lead us to believe... biggrin

I just read the Carrington event. Definitely a different world in 1859, I was definitely interested in the geomagnetic effect.I was interested how they disconnected ( batteries ) power to their telegraph lines and were still able to communicate across Continental America via telegraph lines. As a vintage car owner I will be disconnecting my battery next time one of those flares comes my way. And then I will see if I can still start it.

It's also interesting to not that during such a large flare solar panels will likely catch fire. I wish I had of known this prior to putting them on my roof. I would have gone with a ground mount.

That is some perspective, no wonder they are having a hard time finding planets out there. I think the James Webb telescope has found one. A stellar needle in a haystack. I didnt know what 30° was I had no perspective so I did a little research and it turns out to be about three days or 4,800,000 miles.I would say that is a galactic near miss.

With that comparison image in perspective, and thinking about the sun you see in the sky, one can understand how a large burst could toast us pretty quick.

Now imagine how small we are in relation to the solar system, and how many solar systems we "know" about, and then imagine how much we don't know about.  We are very tiny and insignificant, and have always been living on a thread.  We could be snuffed out in a millisecond and not even know about it.

Puts our little earthly struggles into perspective, and also reminds us that there's no point in getting wound up or upset about big things that we can't control...

this just goes to show to me how perspective is really the most important factor;
My perspective just sees God behind the scenes in all of this - a God that many either chose to ignore, or not stop to ponder about.

In the context of some of the more recent posts, I just see more "behind the scenes" evidence of the presence of God.

Regardless of which perspective you choose to have, no one person on this earth has the power to stop a sunspot from frying our electrical grid and causing massive hardship to everybody.  That's my point.  An "act of God" or an "anomaly of science" still ends up with the same result, so why worry?

Meanwhile, how about those great Canadian Pontiacs?  I often wonder about why hideaways from the Grande Parisienne weren't an option on the 2+2 for '67 and '68.  Seems to me that the sportiest version of the car should have had the sportiest front end... smile

I was reading "Physics Of The Impossible" and came away, as did the author, that there has to be a God. I gained from a different perspective an appreciation that there is certainly more to life than life itself.

When I look around and see what makes the news and how people conduct themselves, it is evident that each person has their own version of reality. There is mass congruence, but individual.

People pray to God hoping for a miracle. It turns back on one's self and you realize you need to look within.

I like to remind myself that every day is a gift. Not every day is a prize, but it is a gift. It is also an opportunity.

Relax, I'm not going to sermonize. smile

Good for you(!);
I think to their own detriment, most people's folly is to get so absorbed in the busyness of their own lives that they do not take to time to truly ponder the larger picture.

I don't insist on anyone agreeing with my beliefs, but I would hope that at least on some level I might make a positive impact on those who I am able to engage in discussing the bigger picture.

I think all of us to a degree stop and ponder. That's a given.

It takes just a little thought, and you quickly realize that you are but a small, but critical incremental element of this matrix. That gives me solice. That's all we are.

So now, off topic, lets get together build a Black on Blue, matching wheels, small CP caps 1968 427 4 speed 2 door post, Soft ray, PW, Tilt, Power seat, F41, Disc brake, 12 bolt posi,

Laurentian. Yes Laurentien,

and the under represented 68 as well.
