Tourists Returning to PEI are Going to Be Shocked by What They See

It's been almost seven months since Fiona hit Prince Edward Island. I finally had a chance to take a drive to the north shore of the island today. It's unreal the amount of the coast that was lost and the damage is as severe as my area of the island. It's going to be quite a while until the island looks "normal" again. I would have taken more photos but my cell phone camera started acting up. furious

I'm having a hard time believing this storm was "Post Tropical" when it hit. While it's hard to see in these photos, many trees were stripped of their branches, and some even had bark missing- similar to what you see when tornadoes hit.

Here's some screen shots of the area "before" (thanks to Google) and after.

Oh my lord. I thought it was bad driving from Halifax to New Glasgow and hitting Mt Thom. It looked like it took swaths out from there towards Cape Breton. Now that Ive seen these pictures it pales in comparison to what you guys endured. I had no idea it was THAT extreme.

Im thankful we had the opportunity to go camping at Caribou provincial park last September. There sure was a lot of devastation over a large area. Many tourist accommodations wont be open this season for sure.

Brackley beach is still closed. A friend of mine was with me today. He's 74 and an Islander and it was the first time he's been to the north shore since the storm and he was blown away by the damage. The sad part is many of the remaining trees that are still standing are so weak that weak wind storms are bringing them down. I've had at least a dozen more trees come down in my woods since.

It won't matter Todd, the people on that island are great, and will always be. They'll come more those travellers, they know.

It's natures way of taking out the weak wood I figure. It's been happening for many thousands of years. Every 70?. 100?

Yes, very much like forest fires. Sad to see but all part of the cycle I'm afraid.

That is shocking Todd! Not to the same..but when the pine beetle went through in BC it was just as devastating..... Mother nature always cures herself. No matter how much we think we effect her..she always has the last say. If you really think about it..... 1 gust of wind can move 1 billion branches on 100000 trees. Just think of the energy we would have to create to do 1 1000 th of the same thing. We have been thawing out since the Ice age....but now we have fancy words for it........

Some Islanders are using Fiona as an excuse to clear cut, instead of selectively cleaning out the damaged/downed trees. no I just left our woods as is, letting nature take it's course, except for one tree laying on our lawn. It is still animal habitat, and the animals are flourishing this Spring. It is a zoo in our area.

People up our way lost homes, cottages, and some farmers, barns for their livelihood.

IMG_6755.jpegI havent been over since Fiona, thanks for the pictures Todd.

Nature will replace the old trees but they were really old along the north shore, not very tall, and very tough. The old tree growth rings are 2 or 3 per mm, new trees today that I see in pine lumber are 2 or 3 cms each. Not very tough and fast rotting. Pic is pine about 4 inches wide.

Good to hear from you Darryl, I think of you when I put my NOS dogdish on the 63. We built a new house in 2019/2020, didnt want any lawn to mow. Only lawn is covering our septic field, we mow that about 2 times a year, the deer and hares mow it the rest of the time. Had 7 deer out there yesterday, lots of birds, like a red tailed hawk, owls, a large pilliated woodpecker, plus small woodpeckers. Lots of ferns, new spruce, fir, birch, some oak and maple. We get monarchs and hummingbirds as well. And no mowing.

Did it affect your shoreline at all Darryl?

I'm seeing a lot of clearcutting as well. I went to a seminar on "Making your woods hurricane proof"  held by Island Nature Trust last October and learned quite a bit. The only concern with falling trees is the ones leaning up against others as they can act as a "ladder" for fires. The ones on the ground should be left alone. Another thing I learned is that the Red Spruce tree is one of the worst trees to have in an area that gets storms like this. The sad thing is the province wants to plant something like 100000 of them as part of the "green initiative". The folks at INT say this is a bad idea. In fact quite a few of the woods that consists of Red Spruce were formerly agricultural fields that were abandoned. These trees have a lifespan of about 60 years and then they abruptly die causing a collapse of the woods. As you can tell by the photos most of the trees that went down were Red Spruce.

The earths magnetic field is getting weaker every year and will continue to do so and more rapidly until it flips in the late 2030's to early 2040's. With a weak magnetic field more solar energy in the form of CME's  and solar winds will reach the earth and this has a direct effect on weather, ocean currents and fault lines (eg: the quake in Turkey happened just after a CME). The more the magnetic field weakens the worse the weather is going to get. It doesn't matter how many electric cars or paper straws we use, it ain't going to change this at all. In fact I wouldn't be surprised at all if we get a similar storm again this year or next.

No. Not much. We have a rocky shoreline.

If you Google: Fiona The Hebrides PEI or Fiona Stanley Bridge PEI, you will likely see images of some real damage. They are just two places down the road from us.

The Hebrides lost many cottages into the Ocean and Stanley Bridge was one of the places Trudeau visited after Fiona's damage.
