Could anyone advice in electrical issues with lights?


Hey there. I have some issues with wiring.

Rear lights and dash panel lights won't come off with lights switch off and key out of the car.

I got a new light switch, but no luck.

Other lights seem to obey light switch and turn light lever. Except they are not  dimming.

Could anyone anyone please suggest where to dig after light switch replacement?

Also on that note - how to take out the dash? I removed the top metal lid, unscrewed two bolts on the sides, it's moving but won't come off. Seems it's more loose on the passenger side. Does steering column need to ba taken out first?

Do the brake lights work properly? If the brake lights are stuck on you could have a bad taillight bulb or socket causing a short to the taillight circuit. I would remove the fuse for the brake lights to see if the lights go out.

 I don't know if 65 and 66 dash top removal is the same but I'll mention it in case it is. On a 66, you have to go outside the car, remove the wiper arms, remove the cowl vent panel and remove one nut off the stud that pokes through the cowl from the inside. The dash top has that one crazy stud sticking through the cowl to the outside which prevents removing the dash pad from the inside only.

Oh you're trying to remove the whole dash? I'm sorry, I thought you meant the top.

Have you removed the speedometer cable? It will prevent the dash from moving very far even with the side bolts taken out.

 I detached the radio only for now. The rest of wires do not look too tightened at this point at the first glance, it feels like something around the column is holding it. Will try to detach speedometer and see how it goes, thanks!

 Ok, so brake lights and back up lights don't do anything no matter if there's a fuse or not, however if I take out tail lights fuse the whole different story begins - cluster turns off along with all rear lights. I tweaked one of 4 lamps and now instead of 3 lights (all lights on) that were turned on previously only one now works, the one I tweaked and the one that didn't work before:( 

Also with all my mambo jumbo seems I broke my left turn light somehow, relay is not clicking if switch it to the left:)

I'm also beginning to suspect the I'm missing brake light sender there. Could that be a reason?

Tweaking lamps going on and off to me is a grounding issue likely where the bulb socket seats in the taillight. Tweak them while they are turned on and you may get them working. Brake lights require more power and ground, maybe that will help them too, but doubt they will work without that switch that works off the pedal travel.

 That's not the brake switch connector.   

That connector appears to be at the bottom left corner of the drawing 11.03 that Mark provided.   It has the black/orange stripe at the bottom of the "T", and looks like it's part of the courtesy lights as it goes to a door switch.

It's almost there! I managed to disconnect all the wires from the dash, however I still have couple of issues.

Can anyone suggest how to disconnect this inner metal cable of the speedometer? 

Also what would be the sequence of disconnecting the heater controls?

That cable should just pull out. I assume there was a nut holding a flanged end of a black plastic casing around that cable?

Where is the black housing for the speedo cable?

There was this weird lamp connected in a weird way to column wires (turn lights etc), does this look familiar?

And is it normal that column wire bundle is squished between the column and some metal plate?

 This guy? It's there, I cut all my fingers yesterday trying to screw the nut back but didn't succeed, so today I went all in and removed the whole dash for revenge.

 That looks like an accessory 4 way flasher that is missing the red plastic knob that the bulb would shine through. 

That is normal for the column wire bundle.

 Oh and it looks like the actual flasher itself that plugs into there is missing.

Hmm.. you mean turn light flasher? I have this cylinder relay plugged into the fuse box.
