I was walking under my maple tree this past weekend when what felt like a needle hit the top of my head. The pain soon spread down to my ears and lasted quite a while. I didn't stick around to find out what it was. I surmised I may have been hit by a humming bird. We have a lot of them around and they fight over the feeder and fly about 60 mph chasing each other. Well, I found the real cause today:
That's the biggest hornets nest I've seen since I moved here and it's swinging precariously on the edge of a small branch. Sooo, at dusk I'll don my old bee suit and exterminate it. It's only about 10 feet off the ground. Does that mean winter with hardly any snow? That's the wive's tale around here. Good thing I spotted it before cutting the grass under it!
I found 5 smaller versions of those in my tree last year. Right over where kids walk to school everyday. I called the city and they were out the next day. They said they'd only take out the 3 that were less than 15 feet from the street, but they ended up taking all 5.
I put up a fake nest in the tree this year and so far, no new real ones.
