Rochester 101


The 335 horse 427 Carburetor is having major issues.

Changed the filter.

My carburetor rebuilder gave me a new filter to try first,

The jobber units have stop valves

(Not my filter and not my hand)

Still not solving the problem in the carb

Either starved for fuel or flooding out.

Looks like a needle/seat and float problem.

I unpacked the Rochester that I had my friend rebuilt for the 4 speed to compare.

I was surprised how similar they are.

The kick down part of the arm has been factory removed because neither one uses a kick down linkage.

The turbo 400 in this car used the electronic switch, seen attached to the carb.

Most turbo 400s use a switch under the dash (I'm told)

 

The code on the four speed is easy to decode

However the carb on the automatic seems wierd,

Could the latter be a remanufactured carb ?

I am thinking of swapping carbs just to see how well the car runs.

I'm wondering how well this will work.

The four-speed carb has had some performance tricks done to it by one of the best.

"This is no longer a Bog-chester" he says biggrin

All thoughts and experience welcomed at this point.

The 4-speed carb is a direct bolt on and will work just fine. The only difference is, you will have to transfer the kick-down switch  contact shoe to the new carb. Its worth a try.

That kickdown switch is correct for a 69 B-body 4 barrel. 69 2 barrel switch is different, and was used in the early 70 4 barrels. A mid-year change on the 70 B-body's went to a throttle cable, and the kickdown switch moved to under the dash.

Re the carb, my 70 454 345 hp LS4 is 7040200 EE, so I'm guessing your 69 427 335 hp LS1 should be 7029200 EE (given the 4 speed one is 7029201 ED). 3318 is the Julian date, just can't remember how it decodes, but I think it's the 331st day of the 1968 calendar year.

Yes, 7029200 EE is correct for 335hp 427 automatics. Date for the 3318 code, is correct too 331st day of the 1968 calendar year.

Had a stressful day at work so I took my broken arm out and did automotive stretching exercises.

Swapped the carb and after I corrected the stubborn fuel leak, took her for a spin

The last time my gut sank into the back of a seat like that was in Mark's 67 Grande (496)

I ended up all grubby at the local cruize night because my neighbours were there.

On the way home, I did a dead stop on a country road and let it go.

11s all the way until the back started to break loose.

Did not test the limits of the car.

Happily cruised home at posted speed.

No stalling, backfiring or rough idle.

Bill has done an amazing job with this carb and now has another one to build.

Right after he finishes my M-20 biggrin

Yes. So, March 16, 1971.


 The digits are stamped (not cast) on both carbs.

I ran the car up to see the carb builder today.

I said to him, "I know how good of a rebuilder you are, do you know how good you are ?"

I told him I swapped carbs and handed him the keys.

"I'll watch the shop" I said with a smile.

He was having a bumpy day with a German built GM 5 speed.

He was gone for about 10 minutes, yes I was starting to worry.

He came back smiling from ear to ear.

Just a few small adjustments and I made plans with him for the next rebuild.

I see they are on amazon for less than one third of what I paid him.

You get what you pay for.

regarding the carb stamping, Rochester revised how it stamped numbers for the 1969 model year from what it dod for 1968, then revised it  again during the model year.

But I need to push pause, because something seems fishy about that m/t carb.

Rochester used a four digit dating system;
XXXY
XXX = the numeric day of the year
Y = the final digit of the calendar year

Now, this is the clincher;
The two letter 'pick code' was only used for carburetors manufactured during a window of time where they might be sent to the vehicle production floor;
After the carburetor was no longer used during production, the pick code disappeared.

ok;
Back to the two carbs:

a) 1966 through to VERY early 1968 Quadrajets used a stamped disc that was attached to the fuel bowl;
b) most 1968 Quadrajets only had the application code and pick code stamped on the fuel bowl - the date code was stamped on the throttle body; this stamping on the fuel bowl only used a single line stamp.
c) early (and most) 1969 model year Quadrajets had the application code stamped like the 1968 units, in that it used a single line stamp; unlike the 1968 stamping, the first two digits for the application code were dropped and the pick code immediately followed the application code. There was a single space, and a four digit date code stamped after the pick code.
d) late in the 1969 model year, the stamping was revised to now take two lines; the full application code came back, with a double space between the application code and the pick code; the second line now had the date code.

Your (70)29200 carb looks 100% legit, the stamping is uniform, and nothing seems out of place;
That carb was manufactured on Thursday November 26th 1968.
(The 1969 model year would have been September 1968 through to July 1969)


Your 7029201 carb looks to be restamped;
The "7" is double stamped - I believe that the way these were stamped, this wasn't possible.
The stamping is not uniform - notice how it gets more defined at the end(?)
The assembly date is wholly wrong for a carb with a pick code;
That date (0751) is for March 16, 1971.
A 1969 model year carburetor manufactured in 1971 should absolutely NOT have a pick code.

I hope this helps.

It's relly too bad that there are some in our hobby that do stuff like restamping to make a buck...

The "7029201" carb is the one that Howard supplied for the 2+2.

It's definitely a cast code and definitely a 1971 carb.

When it was rebuilt by Bill, he commented that he believed it had never been apart before.
