How to take out the antenna from the front fender?

Hey there, I'm looking for advice how to take off the antenna.

I hope it's not necessary to take the whole fender off:)

Also on that note - has anyone found a decent radio replacement with modern features but native look?

Thanks in advance.

Is it the original one with the finned black plastic shroud/nut on it?

It's hard to say, currently it looks like a rusty stump.

Aftermarket

You can snake your hand up and around the fender, hood open to get at the bottom.

Doesn't seem to be possible to have any access through the engine bay or a door threshold:(

I have removed the nut and lowered the antenna down into the fender enough to flip the dogs to a vertical position and pulled the antenna out of the hole. It will be difficult without a mast to hold onto. If you look at the picture I posted I think you will understand what I mean.

Mark... If he undid  the nut, let the base drop down in the fender, could you pull it out from the door opening? Or just drop it down inside the fender, it will go to the bottom, cut the lead wire at the door opening and fish it out from below on a hoist?

Yes, he could fish it out through the door. Cut the cable and push it back through the hole in the jamb first.

Unfortunately I can't unscrew the nut on top as the whole thing is just spinning endlessly, I need to hold it from the bottom, but there's no access. I managed to pull the antenna cable out though, seems it was cut out. But still can't find any access to the antenna assembly. Seems the only way is to take this under-fender inlay, not sure how it's called in English.
PS. Thanks for the radio repair/modification link, I'll most likely use them.

If you can support the hood in the up position, you could remove just the right hood hinge to give you better access.

I'm thinking that is what I may have done on my 65 Laurentien to get at the antenna base nut. I basically used a ratchet strap on the right lower corner of the hood and one at the latch. Attached them to the roof rafters and adjusted them as req.

I know I was just able to reach in to remove the old one, and the same to tighten the factory base. I think taped a section of stiff wire to the base to fish it through the fender hole, and to give me something to grab it with.

Since you are involved in this, Here's a link to some antenna info on thee site,
