I've lived with it for about 25 years now. It's a constant high pitched squeal that often is bad enough to wake me up from a deep sleep.
If you've ever heard a train going slow making a squeal, that is exactly the noise. Go to 13.:45 of this video and that is exactly what I listen to 24/7.
I have had it for about 25 years now but in the last month it has become almost unbearable noise especially while trying to sleep at night. It has now become a pulsating sound that is in rhythm with my pulse. My doctor is going to check my carotid arteries and if they are ok he says I will have to live with it. Mine started years ago with Ménières disease.
Had it for years . If I focus on tasks through the day I forget I have it . At night in bed I put my ear buds on and listen to wind blowing or howling things like that to help overcome the ringing. And it never fails just when I am not noticing it my wife mentions her ringing and dam it my focus shifts to my ringing. Just like when I read this post. Dam it .

I have an 8" fan on the night stand beside my head. That noise really helps. Sometimes when we travel I forget it and I have to go buy a fan if it's too quiet where we are staying.
The cottage was brutal. Off grid, so no noises at night if the wind was calm. I finally rigged up a little 12 volt fan by my head there. Windy nights were great, the sound of the waves at the shore is perfect.

Has anyone here had anything that helped in any way? I have heard melatonin or B12, but have not tried either one. I think anxiety is possibly a trigger for making it worse .

I have the high pitched kind but only in my left ear. I blame too many decades driving panel vans at speed with screaming rear ends. I think RHD may have saved my right ear as the noise was concentrated on the left side of where I sat. My brain largely got used to it, knows it's not real, so cancels it out most of the time. As soon as it appeared I started using Lightspeed Noise cancelling headsets at work, to try to prevent more problems. I also avoid loud music venues like the plague. Occasionally, I get a low frequency hum (just like the 240volt mains hum that some of our electrical equipment emits, which is 50 hertz). My favourite Doctor at the time said that was caused by excess ear wax and to use medicated olive oil spray to loosen it up. He was right of course.........
I'm currently doing covid day 5. It has morphed into a nasty head cold and sinus issue. I've noticed it other times with head colds too, the ringing is severely amplified when the sinuses are involved. Also, when I'm not suffering from any cold or anything but clench my teeth, bite down hard it really gets loud.

My neurologist has referred me to a doctor at St Micheals hospital in Toronto. I need to have the family doctor make the appointment with this doctor. We will see how that goes and a time frame.
