Why is this man smiling?


Because theres no snow in my favourite wrecking yard in Minnesota, it was 10 degrees with barely a whisper of a breeze and the sun was out for most of the time I was there! On December 6th!

It's just over 3 hours from our place. The border was pretty much as always. They just roll their eyes when you say "Going to an auto wrecking near Fargo to look for old car parts".... "You're doing what?"

I visited that yard in 2018 on my way back from POCI Wisconsin Dells, but I got a bit turned around and missed the NE corner of the property and the full-size cars it housed. Much for 1969-70 B-body Chevrolet & Pontiac's?

Quite a few 69-70 full size Chev and US model Pontiacs. No rare stuff though. I got what I think was the last set of hardtop power windows out of there a few months back. One column shift tilt but it's been out in the weather for decades. One 70 Chev wagon with the AM 8 track in it.

Sometimes, yes. But often they are full of mouse nests or even chewed away so theres basically nothing left. Every so often theres some sort of little treasure in them but theres never been anything too great.

Speaking of finding treasures in cars, I know that I left a treasure in the left rear door of our '66 Biscayne. I lost a whistle in it. I don't know what became of the car as it was traded in very good condition in January '70 for another Biscayne, depicted below.

That particular '70 ended up at the wreckers with high miles & encroaching rust in '78, and junked perhaps too hastily.  My brother and I both saw it flattened like a can amongst a truckload going down the 403 & we both knew it had to be the car. It had a radio block-off, a 3-in-the-tree & clutch, rare stuff by '70. Parts could have been used for a '69 Bis-Quick project. Or maybe a tribute to that ancient sighting of a '70 LS5 Bel Air coupe I saw 50 years ago, with a few liberties like a manual transmission. Here's a depiction I created of the LS5 Bel Air I saw (yes it had redlines & F41):

I can also relate to why Carl is smiling. Walking around a wrecking yard with old North American iron present is a trip in itself, especially when stinging insects aren't present.

I never notice the sun as it passes from east to west when I'm in a wrecking yard.

 Oh, for the record, that 1964 Grand Prix behind me is a factory 4 speed car!

And the 65 Bonneville behind it just gave up it's power windows to me a short time ago.

And the 66 Grand Prix behind that has donated the tinted rear glass along with some other pieces to some of my cars over the years. It has/had buckets, console, tinted glass, factory air, nicely optioned car.
