I guess I'm not understanding. So you have to go in each year to renew? Is that not an easy thing to do in Ontario?

In Manitoba we have to do that, it's a 10 minute thing at worst.

That's a tad overexaggerated. This is simply a way to register seldom used vehicles. Its no different than what we do now except now its FREE!!

The Ontario government has made life more affordable and convenient for over eight million vehicle owners by eliminating licence plate renewal fees.

I was actually impressed when I got the letter and found it to be a great reminder to register the old bomb. Since the system changed in 2022 to Free registration the number of unregistered plates skyrocketed to 6% of cars on road being unregistered, OPP and Toronto Police have said they prefer education over enforcement because of the shear number of unregister cars. The fine for driving an unregistered plated car ranges from $85 to $1,000.

Doing it on line in Ontario takes about 3 minutes from comfort of your own desk or kitchen table or sofa.

For me at least it's a non issue because I walk 4 km twice a day and both directions I walk past their office door. It's pretty easy to stop in and say hi. Sometimes I stop and pull weeds in their landscape rock on the way by!

I have renew each of my plates every two years. I only go into the office for license renewal when a photo is required, otherwise I do it online. Takes about 10 minutes, but I have to pay a couple hundred bucks each time.

I should move to Ontario where it's free! ;)

In PEI it's yearly for plate renewals ($100). No reminder is issued so most people are late doing it. We also have yearly safety inspections ($35).
I was a bit worried when I put my 94 Park Ave back on the road this summer. My insurance company (whom I've been with for years and have the Buick insured with since I bought it three years ago) asked to see a copy of the inspection certificate this time before they'd insure it again. My fear is older cars eventually not being insurable as daily drivers in the future. I usually pull the insurance in the fall to save a few bucks but may keep it insured all the time going forward.

I renew online with a bank transfer. Only have to go in every five years to renew the paperwork and get a new picture for my license.

Actually in Ontario if you let your plates lapse for a few years and you want to retain that plate for use, I was told that you must pay every year's fee up to the current one... That can't be right. Is it actually true?

Personally I'm more worried about ethanol and the deaf ears that belong to policymakers. They MUST be aware of the many problems and yet they forge ahead undaunted.

Pretty sure that is true....Been there, had to do it....ONCE. So now just do the renew EVERY year. If you don't I'll bet the make you get the vehicle certified again....
