1960 Strato Chief Wagon rejuvenation


Thank you JJJ for that info, could have used some of that solvent today for a small job!  My blades are excellent, smooth cutting and seem to be non stick.  The problems resulted from having the jig saw operating a full speed and ABS has a fairly low melting point.  Some of the chips were filling the gap behind the blade and sticking back together.  I turned the speed down to its slowest speed and stopped that problem for the most part.

Jake is really into 'helping with the car'.  When I am in the car he joins me: even sometimes just goes in and lays down without me!  Here he is watching me from the drivers side: What are you doing out there?  Not to worry, there is no steering column so he cant drive away!

BTW: Cheviac solved our front bumper situation from one of his parts cars.  Decent chrome, mild surface rust, a couple of dents but solid. We don't want a perfect one, it wouldn't match the car!  Arrived today from Saskatoon!

Lol, good looking help you got there! If I recall correctly coarser blades work better on plastic as there's more time to clear the blade. Anyhoo, you got it done and that's what matters.

The arm rests were needing restoration.  The car only had arm rests on the front doors, none on the rear although they likely should have. When I started to work on them, I realized they looked familiar. We had a pair just like them in our parts stash and I trying to remember where they came from.  Only one of my found ones had a pad but it did still have its base plate.  The ones off the car were in less than stellar condition however, in spite of the age distortions - one had a decent enough pad to use as a pattern.

One more big (& scary) job to do is to recover the wheel wells.  The previous vinyl was very brittle and shredded when trying to remove it.

Well, I have decided that the wheel wells will be done by the upholstery shop in the spring when we have the headliner done. Both of us have shoulder trouble as well as we are big people.  Working inside a car is not an easy task and after being in and out a dozen times for the wheel well process Steve could see my frustration level rising asked me how he may help to make the job easier for me. I smiled and said: Call Toms upholstery and add that to the headliner job in the spring!  Interior panel job done at my end. Slip covers for seats will be done in the spring!

Yes, we know of that car Tempest. He purchased that car shortly after we purchased ours. He bought it 'sight unseen' from a seller in BC, just as you see it . . . . . (our car also came from BC in the late 90's). I did stop to see the car, it lives about 12 klms from our home and in the town we had our business (where it still is under new ownership), he was not home at the time but I left a card and he called and we chatted. It is a Bonneville, I believe that is a US model car is it not? It certainly had more 'bling' than our Strato Chief!  Did you find any treasurers at the swap meet? We could not be there as we are south now.

Not trying to derail, but ..... that 65 Riviera looks like a stunning car.
I have always loved those cars.
