Documenting a 69 2+2 before it becomes history

Fall 1968 build car, estate sale barn car. Not a glorious barn find.

Car last used in 1984.

008a.jpg

The previous, late owner bought it because at the time it was fitted with a 300 hp 327.

Motor was likely installed back into a Vette.

Every single body panel rotted and beyond repair.

013a.jpg

The frame is rotted in places I have never seen before.

So why did I pay too much for it ?

Near perfect, black dash with 2+2 script.

020a.jpg

Nothing is for sale at the moment but the poor girl is far beyond saving.

Have you ever seen a Console shift plate on a 1969. that is set up for a powerglide ? Wow !

019a.jpg

Rare rear defogger convertible.

023a.jpg

034a.jpg

First generation tailights, no drip rail.

Far better than I have. I was going to use the clean second generstion lenses that I had.

012a.jpg

014a.jpg

Note, fall 1968 cars had silver seat buttons where as anything after had colour coded buttons.

016a.jpg

018a.jpg

10 bolt car.

Wire harness runs on the driver's side floorboard. Later cars ran the wiring down the right side.

More to come.

Good score!!
I'd debate the wiring running down the passenger side on later cars, I've never seen that and would add unnecessary wire.

I'm always amazed how well the chrome held up on the 69's. Lots of good parts on that one.

Nice job saving this one for parts and documentation, Randy! When and IF you want to sell a few smaller parts, I would be interested, so please PM me. Again, nice save! Thanks!

Two weeks ago, Mark said "I wish I had a black boot for my black car"

He has first dibs on this one.

010a.jpg

The nut for the antenna base is available. If I can get it off in one piece, this unit will be going on my car.

The fins are in great shape and will be kept as back ups until my car is done.

048a.jpg

The power top works !

The nose cone appears unrepaired.

Should clean up well and will be on the Project 2+2 when it's done.

043a.jpg

The left grill is in great shape but the left one is toast.

You know, I still don't understand when each of the 3 different paint styles on the grills were used.

Heater controls in amazing shape, yep, going on my car.

Instrument panel busted up however the stainless script is saveable.

By the order books that North posted, You could order the power glide in all B-bodies.

I did not realize that it was done often.

Got your nose biggrin

016a.jpg

So this next tidbit has guys looking inside their fenders.

013a.jpg

The stanless at the top of the fenfed has eyes.

Dug out the box that Howard sent and about 50% have the eyes and the rest are like the one at the top corner.

The white car trim does not have eyes.

Can you explain/show the difference in the two taillight versions regarding the drip rail?? Never knew about this. Thanks

I will find the really good posts on here, by other members about it.

If someone finds it before me, please post it.

Bassically two tail light designs for 1969.

Early ones has a flush design with the back-up lense sticking out, almost looked slapped on.

2nd generation had a drip rail along the bottom of the lense and the white back up lense was more refined and smooth fitted with the red.

I posted photo's years ago of the drip rail vs non drip rail, but can't find the thread.    I recently sold a set with the drip rail, check out this thread:

I see the drip rail is a ridge built into the lenses. Neat detail. Ill have to look close at my late 68 build grande to see what it has.

Are the louvers mounted the correct way on this car - scooping forwards? Im a 68 guy. Mine face the opposite way.

The black out paint really seems depend on who was working that shift biggrin

Other than white, there seems to be no hard rule.

Black paint on the tail panel

022a.jpg

Green one seems to be the original paint in that area.

I put a bit more thought into your comment about the wiring running down the passenger side.   I can't remember if it's the wire for the rear antenna, or rear speaker wire, but it ran down the passenger side and had a metal guard under the rear seat to protect the wires.  Is this what you're speaking of?

 bonneville rear attena.jpg

The rear antenna wire is on the passenger side. I never cracked this casing open, on the Black Parisienne, to see what else was inside of the casing.

The driver's side factory sound deadener was never touched so I believe people when they say there is a harness under there.

Yes, that's the metal guard on the right hand side of the photo.   I've sold one or two of the to members.

This one is the only one I have ever seen in person that was not rotted out.

They just used self-tapping screws through the floor boards.
