Steering Box

Hi Guys,

Seems my other white 65 had a steering box from a Z-28 Camaro and worked really well , I thought it was from a 74  Z-28 but not sure which year is the correct one ?, anyone.

I'll try to check tonight to see what interchange there is. I am assuming it will fit a number of years of Z28 possibly.

I'm sorry I totally forgot about this. I can't check right now but I'll try to remember to check interchange later.

When I had a 1964 A body I put a 1988 Trans Am WS6 box on it. I think it was 2.25 turns lock to lock. Everyone said that although it was a very quick box that it wouldn't turn the wheels to the original stops on the A body steering linkage. They were wrong though. The stops hit on both sides. They all claimed the box had internal stops that would prevent full steering movement on the A body but that wasn't the case.

10:1 seems to be a fast steering box

Here's the search results for a 65 Chevelle, either the Cardone or Lares boxes should work for you.  I'm sure my local parts stores in Calgary would have the Cardone in stock, not sure about where you are.

If it has the same bolt pattern as a "B" body here are some choices..

93-96  Impala SS,  Cadi Fleetwood, Buick roadmaster

But the easiest to find is a 1990+ Jeep Cherokee steering box, wrecking yards are full of them.

All of these will fit and be "faster" steering than stock

I have a few PS boxes no idea the ratio but they all were in 64-65 Beaumonts and Chevelles that I dismembered. Let me know if you want me to bring one down to the coast, I am up at my property for this weekend. I will be working in Derouche next week for a couple days.

Hey Cheers dude. the stock one I have is perfect just looking for a faster box like in my other white 65 I had, it worked really well, then I will customize the original steering wheel down to a smaller size ,that should be cool.

Why wouldn't you just buy one locally? That way you can return your existing one for the core fee.

 I agree!!!

Further, these Saginaw boxes almost never wear out. Thev have been in use since around 1963-4, used by all the big 3 manufacturers. Check at the local wreckers, I gave you vehicles to look at in my previous post. I installed a 95 Buick Road master box in my 66 Biscayne, works perfect, steers lighter, and only 3 turns lock to lock.

By the time you get that box from Summit it will be around $700 Cdn, plus shipping, plus duty.....  A box from the wreckers MAY cost $200.  Your call...

That's not what I was talking about.  I'm talking about buying a rebuilt unit from a local auto parts store.
