Brake light idiotsyncrasy

So on my 63, my brake light switch on the pedal was stuck on, the button coming out was missing the arm of the brake pedal. I crawled under there and bent the switch holder into place and then checked to see if the brake light switch was now working, it was but only on the driver side. Didnt make sense so thought the bulb blew by coincidence, replace it and still the same- the bulb I took out looked fine. A headscratcher, checked and bulb was working with parking lights on. Turned on key and right turn signal light, the switch was already on, I must have bumped it when crawling in there. Bulb flashed ok. Turn signal lights off, key off, checked and brake lights both work now.

Left key off, turned right signal light on, right brake light didnt work. Tried left signal light with the signal light on, same thing, left brake light didnt work.

Never saw this happen before, is this normal?

Plus one on that. Chances are very good it's the switch and a good cleaning will help. When my 65 Acadian acted funny like this it wasn't corrosion in the contacts but that dirty old hardened grease. All it needed was a good scrubbing with brake cleaner to make it good again.

New switch from AAW about 2016. But not much else could cause this on a 63. When you are turning and braking, the tail/brake/signal light bulb does have on and off power for the signals, that overrides the brake/tail lights. It is only 1 bulb for everything.

I didnt touch anything in the steering wheel or any lights. I did add LED dash bulbs, including signal bulbs and high beam bulb.

Don, I truly believe that you do not have a problem at all. After reading your post, I went out to my garage to duplicate your situation on my '64 CS. As you are aware, the '64 Pontiac uses two 1157 bulbs in the left and right rear signals. I first checked my rear brake lights; all 4-1157 bulbs worked. I left the key off, turned on the right signal light and found that only the left brake lights worked. I then turned on the left signal light and found that only the right brake lights worked. I replaced my signal light switch two years ago and have had no problems with tail lights, brake lights, or signal lights since then. Conclusion: "This is normal."

You are 100% correct.  I should have read more carefully.  With the key off and foot on the brake pedal you can cancel the respective light a by applying the signal lever.

I will have to get hubby to read this thread. Our 64 Acadian wagon is giving him 'fits n sh*Ts' although I am not sure the sequencing of events is the same etc.
