Caught the Lanc this morning,

That unmistakable sound. I can always sense it, even if it's just barely audible I know it's her.

That's awesome!  Is that the one from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum?  I saw that one on display in 2018 in Ottawa.  It's like an NOS Lancaster... very cool.

It's the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster.

From the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum in Hamilton.

We are lucky here, it flies by regularly.

World-wide, there are only 2 Lancasters that are still flying. The other one is based out of Bristol in the UK.

Yup 5000 HP of Rolls Royce Merlin engines, unmistakeable. When they fly over downtown Toronto usually every Friday in the summer all the offices empty and all these guys looking skyward.

Can you imagine what it must have sounded like when 30 of them came over during the war. Imagine 120 Spitfires.

We saw that sweet bird here at cold lake this summer. What a treat to see a flying example of such a historically significant machine.

 Very cool!

This is the one I saw:

https://ingeniumcanada.org/aviation/artifact/avro-683-lancaster-x

Provenance:

Transfer from RCAF

Built in 1945, this is the most complete Lancaster X in existence, remaining very close to its wartime condition. It was delivered overseas to No. 425 Alouette Squadron RCAF in May 1945, but arrived too late to take part in bombing operations and was placed in long-term storage the same year.

In 1952, it served with No. 404 Maritime Patrol Squadron RCAF in Greenwood, Nova Scotia for a short period of time. The RCAF restored the aircraft in 1964, applying the nose art and squadron markings of an aircraft from No. 428 Squadron, RCAF. The tiny bombs painted on the port side of the nose indicate the number of sorties the aircraft made. The Lancaster was placed in the RCAF's historic aircraft collection in 1964, and was transferred to the Museum, along with the rest of the collection, later that year.

Definitely, especially if you happened to be in certain areas of Europe at the time...

By the way, the museum archives have lots of online photos of Lancasters back in the day, at the link:  https://collection.ingeniumcanada.org/en/search/?q=lancaster&type=all&sort=score_des&page=1

It was in Goderich this summer and flew low over the house heading to YGD.....smile.

There it used to sit on a pedestal until being removed and shipped to Hamilton for restoration.

The sound is amazing.......biggrin

I saw that plane here in Calgary a number of years ago, and in Hamilton in 2023. An hour south of Calgary in Nanton is the Bomber Command Museum. Their Lancaster sat outside for decades, and about 10 years ago they completed the restoration of the engines. They pull it out of its hanger a few times a year to fire up the 4 engines, it's quite the sight.

My understanding of all of this is that there are only two airworthy Lancaster left in the world, one in Hamilton at the Museum which as we know goes out regularly and one in UK, a UK built model also which goes out and even does movie appearances...Guns of Navarone for example. The one in Calgary I believe is not air worthy but well preserved.

Here is the Canadian one that flys around also known as Vera due to markings VR A on fuselage.

I don't think the one in Calgary has any working engines, whereas the one in Nanton has 4 working engines. Both sat on pedestals outside for decades and really deteriorated, and neither will ever be airworthy.

Dad used to give tours at The Warplane Heritage Museum. A Navigator in WWII, he flew in many planes in Europe after training in Nova Scotia.

He was very familiar with that Lancaster. Considering how many WWII Warbirds were made, some are nearly extinct.

The sound of those thundering radial engines. thumbsup.gif

The Avro Lancaster has 4 Rolls-Royce V12 Merlin engines.

The American Boeing B-17 has 4 Wright 9 cylinder radial engines.

Cam I know you know that the Merlin is a V12 engine but your post could leave then impression that it was a radial engine, just want to make sure others are not confused. l know you are talking about warbirds in general.

V12 Merlins would certainly sound different than radial engines.

Thanks for clearing up any confusion I may have caused by stepping out of my depth. wink

In this pic you can see the exhaust exiting the engine cover.  It gives you an idea of the size and layout of the engine in relation to the wing (pic from the archive link I posted above).
