Found 5 undeveloped family Super 8 movie spools.

I've found 5 undeveloped (and exposed), and 3 developed spools of super 8. From the late 60's, early 70's. My dad had a Bell & Howell camera.

Just found in my late parents stuff. I knew they existed, but couldn't find them till now. A priceless treasure to be sure as all of us really only have still images of our early lives. Movies would just be fantastic.

Anyone have any experience getting vintage spools developed (can it even be done?), and having them digitized.

I had our old family 8mm films digitized last winter. It's not an inexpensive venture, but we'll worth it.

I have been working on Super 8, Single 8 and Standard 8 film since 1980 and transferring at first to VHS and more recently to DVD / Blue Ray until business really slowed down so I sold most of my equipment in July 2024. There are labs all over Canada that will develop your film and it is pricey. Then you need to have it transferred to a digital format and depending if mute or sound, if you want them edited or not, music dubbed or not the price will vary. I don't know of anyone outside of Montreal that can do it all at once but you may have to start by getting the films developed if you can't find a company that does it all at once.

At this point all I'm left with in terms of equipment is for transferring videos to digital formats such as DVDs, BlueRays or files to be played on computers or web. I just finished producing a movie last week, it was my fifth in 2024.

Thanks guys. I see many on-line places but what and who to choose? There is a very good, old and established camera shop in town. I'll go see them today for some idea.

And yes, I know it isn't cheap!

Perhaps when I get them done if there is any car stuff I'll post it here.

Cheers, Mark.

I had the old 8mm from the 50's to 70's converted to digital along with dozens of slides at Costco. Just the 5 reels cost around $200, but don't know anywhere that could do the developing.

Well worth the trip down memory lane.

We acquired a short clip off an 8mm for my parents 40th anniversary party, they never had seen it. His best man took it of them driving off from his in laws in a 62 parissienne leaving on their honeymoon.

There are  Super 8 to digital transfer units for sale on Amazon.

Would be worth purchasing if you have a lot to transfer.

https://www.amazon.ca/Wolverine-Digital-MovieMaker-Digitizer-MM100PRO/dp/B0785H3FGN

There are also computer programs that take the noise and colour correct the digitized super 8 so they look like a movie made today. -G

Had a pile slides from Mosport race track and vacation photos. Had them put on cds and were wonderful. Ordered extra copies in Bluetooth and found out no one had Bluetooth. Had a few converted to regular format so they could be used on regular machine. Cliff

 Bluetooth?  Maybe Blue-Ray?

I had some 8mm done in Fredericton.  As other's have said, not cheap, but you'll thank yourself everyday for finding the money.  You won a lottery by finding them.

could always source out an old projector too I suppose, but risk a projector eating some film...maybe not.

Thanks for all the replies.

We know it'll be pricey, but it's worth it. Looks like Niagara like Randy suggested is the go to down her.

They have to be sent to Renfrew Ontario. That I'm a little leery of as they are priceless. I'll have to courier them, or at least first class and wait to see of Canada Post goes on strike.

I have to bring some negativity to this, based on experience. As they have sat so long, undeveloped, they may yield no or poor results.

I have a customer who does transfers. I repair his projectors. They're specific purpose Sony projectors from the 70's. They project directly into a camera. The camera is electronically synchronized to the projectors resulting in best quality transfers.

If you get yours successfully developed, reach out to me please and I'll get these on to a USB stick for you.

Yes, unfortunately Rob, they might just be blank. But I've heard that even if they yield even a poor result, they can be transferred and upgraded to acceptable.

I guess I'll have to at least try.

I have 3 processed reels that I'd like to transfer. I'll pm you thanks.

Storage and where the film has spent the decades can affect it's "develop-ability" if there's even such a word. Dad used to keep his 35mm film canisters in the fridge.

We probably all have Super 8 film from the past that we have forgotten about. March Break and summertime we would go on a long-distance road trip. We must have many hours of archival footage from 50++ years ago of Disneyland, Yellowstone, Whister when it was a single gravel parking lot with a gondola. I'm guessing my brother grabbed all that when the parents went into assisted living.

I think the undeveloped film was kept dark and relatively cool for all the years.

I would not risk watching any home made tape my parents made in the 70's
