Trainhopping across Canada

If you have the time, check these very new video's of a European YouTuber GIFGAS Trainhopper crossing Canada. Montreal to the west coast. My god we live in such a beautiful country.

I find this absolutely mesmerizing. You can feel his freedom and fear. The Canadian scenery, camera work and his soundtracks are top notch. Tell me you wouldn't wanted to have done this when young...

For some reason I think you'd like these Todd,

The last video was just posted. Watch them while you can, YouTube is slowly deleting his posts.

I've always wanted to jump on a freight train from Calgary to Vancouver. I've done the drive many many times, but the view would be quite different from the rails.

A friend of mine works for CN. Playing with toy trains as a kid, going to work for him is like going to his hobby.

I see today the loss of numerous train racks I can remember in use decades ago. Instead there are now biking trails without any rails in sight. It is neat to follow along the old railroad line paths that appear and disappear, but via Google Maps satellite one can still see the old right of way more plainly.

I would love to take a train trip through the Rockies, but not during avalanche season.

Back in 2008 my family and I took a VIA train ride from Toronto to Quebec City for Quebec's 400th anniversaire. It was thoroughly enjoyable, the food was good, it and terminated at the station in sight of water and near the base of a dandy climb up to the Chateau Frontenac. Honestly, a pillow menu. Plus I could listen to those very French people speak ESL all day long. So cute! I felt embarrassed by how much French I had forgotten.

If you want to be a little more comfortable you can take the Canadian across Canada. I'd love to go but it's very expensive.

Spoiler Alert - the dummy missed the best part of the trip, the Canadian Rockies!!! I've always wanted to go through the spiral tunnels by Field BC, and the Mount MacDonald Tunnel under Rogers Pass.

Was the section through the Maritimes already removed by youtube, or did he think that Canada starts at Quebec, like most people?  ;)

Looks like late summer, early fall.  He's talking about how hot it is in Toronto, and once he gets to the prairies the harvest is on.  I'd say likely some time in September.

I think he landed in Montreal.

So which segments were removed by youtube?

None of these Canada segments were removed yet. He's saying his early ones are being deleted. I wouldn't be surprised if all of his hopping videos get taken down.

The railroads are likely a pretty powerful lobby.

Ah, I see.  Thanks!

I only got most of the way through the first one so far, but will watch more as time allows.  It's an interesting way to travel, but not for everyone, living rough while dodging the "law".

Some 40 years ago VIA rail was offering student rail passes, and my friends and I came up with a plan to buy student passes and see the country while living on peanut butter and bread, and other inexpensive nutrition.  In the end, we never went through with it, but part of me wishes that we had.  Youth is a unique time in life when you have little to no responsibilities but are adult enough to be able to do some cool things.  Only problem with youth is that you don't know enough to appreciate it until after it has passed... :)

Mary and I did this in May of 2023, I can't believe I never posted this. It was absolutely unforgettable. We flew west and stayed in Victoria for a few days then headed to Vancouver to  board the train back home to Toronto. There were only 6 couples I believe in prestige cabins on our train the at the rear of the Canadian with your own Park Car and observation deck also attached to dinning car where the food was incredible. We had three 24/7 concierges' and the service was second to none. It was a great 4 day trip and we loved so much we are planning to take the Toronto to Vancouver run in the near future.

Well that's what everyone says but I've travelled them, Hells Gate from the rails in something to see but the entire country is all beautiful, I was awestruck waking up at 5:30 am and looking out the picture window of our cabin at the beautiful golden fields of Saskatchewan and the northern lakes in Ontario and pines and Canadian shield were awesome as well.

You had posted it Ray, but maybe before your journey.  I don't recall if you provided a review afterwards.

Here's the final segment of that journey, it's not as good as the previous chapters:
