GM power seat slide bushings. Needing some.

Anyone know a source that isn't stupid expensive? I'm not paying $150 Canadian + for these, no can do.

They are all broken, cracked and crumbling. The last person to use the seat wouldn't have been able to move it for or aft. Peices of the bushing were stuck in the drive gear.

The last seat I did (A body), all the bushings were intact. They were white in Colour.

I'd love to find a way to make 8 of these myself.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Put me down for 8 of them too!

For now I sliced some pieces of plastic air brake tubing for semi trailers and slid it on the sliding rail but it's not quite the right size.

3D printer someone???

3D print a bunch of 6" or so strips with this exact profile, then cut then file to length, hand file some end tapers on them. I don't think that taper need be too precise. Just as long as it doesn't sweep the lube away.

As long as the bushings you made pushed tight onto the slide notches, didn't wobble and had the same overall section thickness, they would 100% work.

Printers...

The stuff I used is a bit on the small side but I tried some other stuff that was snug and that's no good, as you say.

I just can't bring myself to cough up $90 Canadian for 8 little 1" long pieces of plastic.

No pressure Mark but I'm counting on you to come up with a good solution like you always do!

Find a material and router them? Shape with belt sander? Looks like some bread/cutting board materials?

Hmm. Cutting board. You may be onto something Don. I think I'm off to our thrift store tomorrow.

How about some Nylon 6/6 material in 7/16". The GM slides are exactly 7/16 flat to flat.

And look at this, I found a router bit that matches the profile almost perfect.

thumbnail_IMG_8723.jpg

So router the edge of the sheet to the round profile. Cut the strip to the height. Mount that length into a slotted piece of wood and mill with a router, or on a table saw, cut the slot. (blade must be 1/8 wide).

Cut them to length and finish to suit.

I think it could actually work.

Nylon (6/6), HDPE would work, but Delrin would be the best material.

Where do I fill out my order form?

That all looks like it would be the cat's meow.

I'm going to try Carl. If I can get the material, I think I can come up with a way to jig it to allow that fine slot cut.

Yes Mark, Nylon or Acetal (Delrin) would work, but the moly filled nylon we carry would probably be best. I don't stock anything at 7/16" but have 1/2" material.  If the Posties ever get back to work I can throw a chunk in the mail for you to play with.

If you ever need some plastics, just let me know It's what I do.

Yes! Thanks Dan. I think even a 1/2 thick would be fine. The bushing could be 1/2" deep no issue. Could be cut off to 7/16 thick. Good to have someone here that knows and deals with these materials.

When the strike settles I'll pm you on this.

Thanks, Mark

Dan I have a couple of boxes here that are going to Mark. I'm looking in to using a courier. If I do find one to do it I'll arrange to get the stuff from you and i can toss it in the box.

Good table saw with a fence would cut that slot. Material may melt if speed/pressure too much? Work best to do a nice long piece then cut to the short length- but Im guessing you know more about this than me if you have a router bit that fits so perfectly.

No expert at all Don. And yes, melting will be an issue. Plastic is hard to cut. I think you'd have to make the cuts and the routering just a little at a time and very slowly. Maybe mount the strip into a slotted peice of wood first for the long cuts?

And then cut them individually.

The nylon cuts fine with a table saw or router. For the saw, sharp carbide blade and NOT overly fine. Too fine plugs up and melts. Plastic doesn't chip like wood so need some space between teeth.
Routers nice just needs a nice sharp blade.
For the profile you are attempting a router table would be nice or at least a fixture to kinda work like one so you are working the piece rather than the router.
