Ontario vehicle sales tax. How does it work.

Ontario,

So I just sold a 09 Charger of a friends, to my daughters boyfriends father. The seller did not provide a sales recipt fror the car, as I'm to understand the sales tax is calculated by a book value. this on any car 2000 and newer.

So he goes in without a recipt, hands the paper over to the clerk and she ask's, "how much did you pay for the car". He quickly answers $_000. She continues with the transaction without blinking and he gets it all done.

I didn't think a name your own price was still possible on a 09.

How is it supposed to work? I thought you needed a certified appraisal to challenge their blue book?

I thought you STILL need a receipt stating the selling price? At the very least..

I didn't even think you needed a recipt. Just a signed ownership, a safety for fit, or an appraisal for unfit.

Don't you need the buyers package? There used to be a field for the selling price.

if you dont have the package they print one out and charge you for it. on the package it will have a low price and a high price. if he gave them a number in between they would push it through

That probably explains it perfectly Kevin. His number happened fit in that range.

So in actual fact, you still need a recipt. It can either work in your favour, against you or not at all taxwise. The trick would be knowing their book numbers.

So would you buy sellers package first and then determine the price? If it comes on the printout...
