Cleaning up a B body power seat assembly. Thread?

A little more work on the B power seat I'm working on. This is turning out to be a big project, probably going overboard again, but that's just fine with me.

Bead blasted a frame today (but not the underside, it needs to be smooth for the sliders). A steel wooling with some Dominion sure seal rust remover, then a water rinse within a couple of minutes. Dry and another wipe with some Tung oil and steel wool to preserve it. I could have painted it, but I prefer the bare steel look.

Before all of this I used some old Dollarama oven cleaner to degrease it. The absolute best thing I've ever found to remove hardened grime. I don't think they even carry it any more as it is seriously nasty stuff. I've cleaned filthy engine blocks with it. Easy off is a similar thing at 3 times the cost with half the power

Before,

Cleaned up the track bases, picked out the gear teeth. No blast, but did the oven cleaner. Painted the feet.

Interesting that one track base (drivers side) has the feet welded to the channel, I'm assuming that perhaps the rivets holding the feet came loose on that unit in the past, created an annoying play in the seat, and someone (the dealer?) tacked welded it. Or maybe this is factory USA 67 thing?

Also of note, is the B gear rack (at least of the 67 US car) has a robust track and a really nice gear made of what looks like bronze. The A body horizontal rack is a lighter stamping with the gear include. Is this a year thing? Do A and B body tracks vary in construction 63-70?

"A" body, 67?

Separated the cap from the relay as it was pretty sad looking. Blasted and re plated in Nickel. I know they are available new, but what fun is that.

I'll clean up those dirty relay plug contacts later.

Some thoughts,

The one thing about this assembly, it is from a 67 Strato Bench (thanks Kevin long ago). Although you might think different, I know the Strato Bench uses the same mounting points as the standard bench, but the concern is the cable lengths. I'm wondering if the motor and transmission assembly sat in a slightly different spot on the Strato frame? I see different colour cables combinations across both to the passenger side. Regardless, the distance between the L/R feet are the same. Either track assembly, std or Strat are relatively the same height as well

Another thing is the switch plug may differ in how the wire bundle comes in to the block. Also, I do know the Std bench bottom track has a little protruding forward tab that gets a small trip piece applied. Strato does not have this. No prob.

All will be discovered in time I suppose.

My experience with the Strato Bench tracks is pretty much only 66 but if I remember right the distance from the foot mounting holes is narrower from one side to the other vs the regular bench. It seemed to be when I put a regular bench power track under a Strato Bench the cable had to take a little bit of a winding route from the gearbox to the passenger side track because the cable was a bit too long. And for sure the mounting points on the floor are unique to Strato Bench vs regular (in 66 at least) because when I got an entire seat (I think it was from Cheviac?) way back I needed those 4 little brackets as well and I welded them into the black Grande Parisienne that Tom now owns.

So basically these cables will come up short then?

I always thought it was just the Strato Bucket that got the special floor bracket. Hmm.

In looking at photos, I do see now that the strato is visibly further away from the sill. Maybe the longer Std bench cables will be the trick here. Old brain at it again! Thanks Carl.

I'm slightly worried that will be the case.

I've got a ton of images of the undersides of GM seats, and from what I can figure, the drivers side cable combination seems for the most part to share the Blue = forward Vertical, Black = Horizontal and Yellow = rear Vertical. The Passenger side always has a black, the Yellow can be Red, and the Orange can be Blue. Probably more combos, but for the most part, this seems to be it.

This is the Strato I have. I think If I can find a passenger "Blue" to replace the Orange, I might be fine assuming the lengths are indeed represented by GM with colours?

Here's an image I found of the actual Strato seat this drive came from. Is there a slim possibility the passenger side orange cable could make the reach?

all cables but the Orange are used on the Std Bench.

I'm guessing that is the case but I've never really confirmed it and I don't have any right now.

You could maybe ask JohnneeD to check his power seat cable colours? I pulled it out of a 66 Caprice wagon with a regular bench seat.
