Scammer

So this is clearly a scammer but what had he hoped to gain? I've never had one like this before.

Moments after I posted a GM pickup mirror for sale on Marketplace I get this reply and follow up on it many times (even though I realize he's a scammer, I'm trying to figure out his modus operandi)

What would he gain if I did give him my address and my email address so he could send an E-transfer?

I had a similar thing happen to me. The guy (I believe his name was also Youssef) didn't ask any questions about the item I was selling and did not try to negotiate the price. He wasn't going to be able to pick the item up for a week but wanted to get payment sorted as quick as possible. He was only interested in my personal information. He wanted my address (not necessary for payment) and wanted my banking information for e-transfer. I told him he only needed my email address for e-transfer but he insisted he needed my bank account number as well. When I told him I would give him only my email address and that I had automatic acceptance for my e-transfers, he disappeared. Looks to me like they are trying to gain as much personal information as possible so that they can access your bank accounts.

Who in their right mind would give out bank information for an E-transfer! Totally not needed. I smelled a rat on this one and that's why I didn't even want to tell him where I was or give him my email. If guy is meeting me for a 30 dollar item he can darn well go to the ATM on the way to meet me and then give me cash!

Back in the day we thought nothing about sending someone a cheque for something. It contained our name, bank information, and likely our street address as well.

Sad isn't it that we have to be on guard all the time now.

I should have taken this farther to see if he would try to get my bank info.

On Team Chevelle? Wow, I thought it was fairly safe. Now, Marketplace and Craigslist, totally different story.

Had this happen on Kijiji, but not yet on marketplace- I dont sell much there. They wanted my name, email, and address, I had my phone number in the ad. They were using a fellows name from Bay Bulls, NL. He had an unusual name, I found him on Google and phoned him. They had scammed him of $2,000 and then kept using his name etc to scam others. I went as far as giving up my name and address so they could get a price for shipping. A shipper contacted me, it was an unusual name out of Montreal, I googled that, kept turning up Romania. Since then no phone or email in my ads, I let them contact me via Kijiji.

Aint that the truth!

Despite all of the advantages that the internet has given us, I would trade all of it to go back to a time when we didnt have to worry about some jackass from the other side of the world stealing us blind because they have been able to get our information through no fault of our own.  I would love to tell the people who made our world as it is currently that they have failed miserably and in the future they would be well served to consider the negative implications of their great new idea before plunging us all into it without our consent.

I was reading that there have been such huge leaps in "quantam computing" that within a year or two no password will be safe. These computers will be able to hack any password in seconds. Then what will we do? Retina scans?

No anesthetic castrations for any male caught scamming. That might be a good start. Just a suggestion...
