Temperature and oil pressure sender questions.

I have the full gauge package instument cluster and I'd like to get the correct senders for both oil pressure and temperature, in the hope the instruments would actually work.

The oil pressure guage reads 0-80 psi and the temperature 100-250.

I have seen 0-80 psi senders advertised before, and know it mounts just behind the dist on the sbc, but am totaly unfamiliar with the temperature sender. Where would the best place be to mount one (my intake has numerous aux ports into the cooling)? And what one would I need? I do know it's a matter of resistance for these senders.

Can anyone here educate me on these senders, and what I'd need, where to purchace etc? Anyone done this?

Cheers, Mark.

Mark

I have the part numbers for the 69 Tempest/Lemans/GP but unfortunately, I don't have a parts book for full size. Typically, the senders are the same, but I can't promise.

Oil sender is 6460992.
Temp sender is 6402383.

As far as mounting, if it's a Chevy engine, most of them have a port just behind #1 cylinder exhaust port that GM used. I would think that is likely the best spot. I forget the reasoning, but someone once told me the intake ports were not as accurate.

One thing about the oil senders. I have heard people say the number stamped in the unit near the base (60,80,100 or whatever) means it's for a gauge with those numbers on it. I was taught that those numbers where the number of ohms resistance that particular sender had. I don't know of a way to find out what your 69 oil gauge used originally.

Thanks for the numbers and info carl, it's at least a good starting point. It's apparently not that easy to match an aftermarket sender with a stock instrument, the temperature sender being the fussiest. Looks like I'll have to find a pair that match the instruments. Too bad you couldn't get them with adjustable resistance.

With the help of the web, I'll figure it out eventually!

Cheers, Mark.

I may have some catalogues at work that will let me cross those GM numbers to jobber. If I ever get over this rotten flu, I will give it a shot.

I have a dream of going back to work tomorrow. If so, I will try to do that for you.

You could wire a resistor (or a variable resistor) in the circuit if you couldn't find the correct sender.

Carl, the number 6402383 is apparently the same for the full size 69 USA Pontiacs. So it says in this companys catalogue for the big 69' Pontiacs.

www.lectriclimited.com in the US has them listed for those cars. They say the ones they have made, are built with care, to work correctly with the temperature gauge. Exactly as oem. $25.

It's a larger 1/2 fitting. Did SB big Chevrolet and CP cars with factory temperature gauges use the bigger 1/2 fitting? Was it located in the intake manifold, rather than in the ds head as with the idiot light's smaller fitting? If not, where else would there be a 1/2 hole for this sender?
