Muncie 4 speed oil

Muncies came with oil rated GL4    Some guys on Chevelle site have had failures with other oil rated better.. I found oil today rated at GL4 only!!!  CarQuest store here, deals with AC Delco  and if you want original GM oil,  then try this part # 89021672

When I had my M21 rebuilt with new synchros and bearings, the old mechanic insisted on the GM oil.  He claimed that it is the only stuff that works reliably.Over the years I have put way over 200K miles on Muncies and have had zero failures.  Just normal wear and tear.  Why use anything else?

I had the SS427 added to the fenders as well as a Delco-AC CD ignition kit.  Headers came too.  The widened rims and fat fires were required early on.  It was Day 2 on day two as well.  With the car all apart and the body on the rotisserie, it doesn't look very pretty right now.  I put close to 200K miles on this car.  The transmission was still working fine.  With new seals, i could put it right back in the car as is and not worry.

Don't be afraid to use better oil. Just because the best oil they had back then was GL4 and I am sure it was not even rated GL4 back in the day, ( I'm pretty sure it was GL1 ??)does not mean thats what is the best today. I will use 75/90 full synthetic. I will use Petro-Canada Traxon Synthetic 75/90 and by the way Gulf now Petro-Canada had always engineered GM's lubricants in the past. But now with their credit problems, Petro-Canada dropped GM so now your GM oil will be filled by Shell so the formulas will be completely different than in the past. If you want the old GM oil you could pick up Petro -Canada Traxon 80W90 and it will likely be cheaper than buying the GM oil but your will have to buy a 4L jug cause they dont sell it in 1 liter containers>before you install the Muncie, pull the front bearing retainer and see if the washer face of the bearing retainer nut faces the front which is contrary to a washer nut in other cases & it will leak like a sive otherwise. If the guy really knows his muncies, it will be right.  Also there is a new style bearing retainer that has a seal vs the old ones have no seal. I hate replacing clutches due to oil leaks....
Great lookin Chevelle by the way! Can someone enlarge those pics ??
